Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant declared an emergency for 48 hours as sirens sounded across northern Israel on Sunday. The Israeli military said it launched “preemptive” strikes on southern Lebanon as it awaited attacks by the Hezbollah. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said around 40 strikes were fired on Hezbollah targets “that posed an immediate threat to the Israeli home front.” The IDF also told the population in the north to stay near shelters in case of a Hezbollah attack. Flights from Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport have been delayed, while incoming flights are being redirected. There are currently no reports of injuries as Israel’s Iron Dome air defense system intercepted some rockets from Lebanon.
Pentagon ready to back Israel against Hezbollah
The United States Department of Defense said on Sunday that it is closely monitoring the latest developments between Israel and Hezbollah and that it is “postured to support the defense of Israel.” US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Charles Q. Brown Jr. is currently in the Middle East and plans to visit Israel. Meanwhile, the USS Lincoln Strike Group arrived at the US Central Command (CENTCOM) in the Middle East earlier this week to boost US support for Israel. However, the US insisted it is focused on avoiding escalations in the region.
IDF says it stopped attack on central Israel
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said on Sunday that Hezbollah was planning to strike central Israel but that the attack was foiled. Most of the rockets that reached their targets fell in the north of the country. The IDF claimed it mobilized around 100 fighter jets, which hit “thousands” of Hezbollah rocket launchers during its preemptive attack. Meanwhile, flights to and from the Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv have been resumed.
