USS Gerald R. Ford, the largest aircraft carrier in the world, arrived in Greek waters on Monday, with the most recent reports placing its location close to the island of Crete. The move comes amid the American military buildup in the Middle East as negotiations on Iran’s nuclear enrichment reach a critical phase. In recent weeks, Washington has amassed its largest concentration of air and naval strike power in the Middle East since the 2003 Iraq invasion. The combined air and naval power features dozens of aircraft, and the USS Abraham Lincoln, which is already stationed in the Arabian Sea. The 337-meter USS Gerald R. Ford displaces 100,000 tons and uses two A1B nuclear reactors to generate triple the electrical power of previous carriers, and hosts over 75 aircraft.
