Chaos broke out in the streets of Kabul this morning as the Taliban entered the capital from all sides, sending negotiators to the presidential palace to demand the democratically elected Afghan government step aside. Helicopters clattered over the city evacuating international staff from foreign embassies to Kabul’s civilian airport, the only route out of Afghanistan still in government hands after the Taliban captured the last border crossing with Pakistan. The streets of the city, population 4.6 million, were choked with traffic as residents tried to rush home or towards the airport, some abandoning their cars to the gridlock and setting out on foot to reach it.
