The protests – which were encouraged by President Donald Trump and turned violent – have been roundly condemned and led to the First Lady’s chief of staff resigning. The Republican National Committee described the extraordinary events as “domestic terrorism” and said the represent “an attack on our country and its founding principles.” Lawmakers to be evacuated, which delayed the constitutional process to affirm President-elect’s Joe Biden’s victory in the November election, after mobs stormed the US Congress on Wednesday. The chaotic scenes culminated in a fatal shooting. The Metropolitan Police Department said it was taking the lead on the investigation but did not immediately provide details about the circumstances of the shooting. The police chief of Washington, DC said pro-Trump protesters deployed “chemical irritants” on police in order to breach the security perimeter and stormed the building. More than a thousand National Guard troops were deployed to disperse the crowds and after a four-hour standoff, the site was declared secure by 6pm (local time). Protesters, who were seen fighting with officers both inside the building and outside, were described as “special people” by President Donald Trump, who responded to calls to condemn the violence. In a video address shared on Twitter, he urged his supporters to “go home” but repeated an unsubstantiated claim that the election was “stolen”.  Nick Note: Yesterday was nothing short of treason a organized insurrection by Donald Trump timed precisely to stop the president elect to be vetted. Thousands Of Trump Supporters Storm US Capitol Building In DC 2

Capitol police locked down the Capitol as the president’s right-wing supporters breached security lines and entered the building to reject his 2020 election loss to Joe Biden. The violent crowd clashed with police on the steps of the Capitol Building during the joint session before they stormed and overran the Capitol Building.

Neighbouring congressional office buildings were under evacuation orders as confrontations become increasingly violent with tear gas being deployed and punches being thrown. Vice president Mike Pence was quickly evacuated by Secret Service agents as officials quickly lost control of the shocking situation. Washington DC mayor Muriel Bowser ordered a 6pm curfew in the city as the situation spun wildly out of control and Capitol Police asked for additional law enforcement support. President-elect Joe Biden said that President Donald Trump must “step up” and demand that his supporters end their “siege” of the U.S. Capitol building, after pro-Trump protesters refusing to accept his election loss swarmed the building on Wednesday, putting it on lockdown.

“Our democracy is under unprecedented assault, unlike anything we’ve seen in modern times,” Biden said. The former vice president said that for demonstrators to storm the Capitol, smash windows, occupy offices, invade the halls of Congress and threaten the safety of duly elected officials: “It’s not a protest, it’s insurrection.” Nick Note: Black lives matter and their protests and violence is allowed. Trump supporters breach US Capitol as fateful vote looms

Hordes of President Trump’s supporters breached the US Capitol on Wednesday, overpowering police, forcing the building into lockdown and disrupting the congressional certification of the 2020 presidential election results. Thousands of protesters had previously broken through a fence and stormed the building, according to reporters on the ground. Dozens of protesters pushed past police made it inside the building, photos posted on social-media show and video shot by a Post reporter show. Some carried American, others the Confederate stars and bars. Several protesters made it onto the building’s balcony, where at least one Gadsden flag was draped. The invaders did not breach the congressional chambers, but the certification process was interrupted, with lawmakers told to take shelter. Among those in the Senate chamber was Vice President Mike Pence, whom President Trump has fiercely criticized for what he perceives as a lack of effort to stop the election certification process. It was not immediately clear if the vice president had been evacuated from the building. With police on the Capitol grounds overwhelmed, reinforcements were called in from across the city, as the boom of flashbangs resounded throughout America’s capital. At least one congressional office building was evacuated earlier in the day. After the protesters had already been in the building for some time, Trump tweeted his support for law-enforcement. “Please support our Capitol Police and Law Enforcement,” he wrote. “They are truly on the side of our Country. Stay peaceful!” With police on the Capitol grounds overpowered, reinforcements were called in from across the city, as the boom of flashbangs resounded throughout America’s capital. Meanwhile, Washington Post reporter Rebecca Tan tweeted an 11-second video clip of the throngs streaming toward the building, with some stomping over a flimsy fence marked with an “Area Closed” sign. Trump protesters break into Capitol building “Hundreds of Trump supporters have stormed the barricades at the back of the Capitol and are marching toward the building,” wrote Tan. In a follow-up tweet, Tan said that some attempted to push inside the building, but were rebuffed by police. “Protesters are charging toward the Captiol [sic] steps. Some tried to scale the construction structures and have been tackled by police,” Tan wrote. “They want to enter the building and are making attempts at intervals. Capitol police trying to hold them back.” Thousands of supporters of the president descended on Washington for a raucous Wednesday rally, as Congress moved to finalize the results of the 2020 presidential election. Trump himself delivered a fiery speech in the hour leading up to the joint session of Congress, in which he repeated his claim that the election was rigged against him, without providing hard evidence to support the allegation. Schumer: Democrats will have Senate majority

Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer (N.Y.) on Wednesday declared himself Senate “majority leader” and asserted that Democrats have regained control of the Senate even though one of two Senate runoff races in Georgia has yet to be called.

“It feels like a brand new day. For the first time in six years, Democrats will operate a majority in the United States Senate — and that will be very good for the American people,” Schumer said in a statement released Wednesday morning even as the race between Democrat Jon Ossoff and incumbent Republican David Perdue is still undetermined.

Anticipating control of the White House and both chambers of Congress, Schumer signaled that Democrats plan on passing another major coronavirus relief package soon, promising “help is on the way.” “America is experiencing one of the greatest crises we have ever faced, and the Senate Democratic Majority is committed to delivering the bold change and help Americans need and demand. Senate Democrats know America is hurting,” he said. Schumer also thanked “everyone in Georgia and across the country who volunteered their time, donated what they could, and worked so hard to elect new leadership in Washington.” The Democratic leader promised to work closely with the Biden administration. “As majority leader, President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris will have a partner who is ready, willing and able to help achieve a forward-looking agenda and deliver help and bold change to the American people,” he said.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Wednesday morning also declared victory in both Georgia races.

“Now, because of the courageous leadership of Georgians, America will have a Democratic Senate working hand-in-hand with our  Democratic House majority and President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris,” she said in a statement. Pelosi highlighted coronavirus relief legislation as a top priority. “We will pursue a science and values-based plan to crush the virus and deliver relief to struggling families, safeguard the right to quality affordable health care and launch a plan to Build Back Better powered by fair economic growth,” she said. Democrats at a minimum will control 49 seats after Rev. Raphael Warnock defeated Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-Geo.) in a runoff special election to serve the rest of retired Sen. Johnny Isakson’s (R-Ga.) term. Even with Democrats in control of the Senate agenda, they still need significant bipartisan support to move legislation unless they use a special budgetary process known as reconciliation to move bills with simple-majority votes. But that special pathway is reserved for legislation that directly impacts revenue, spending or the federal deficit. Almost all controversial legislation needs to overcome a 60-vote procedural threshold to cut off debate and proceed to an up-or-down vote in the chamber. Ossoff is leading Perdue by just more than 16,000 votes with an estimated 98 percent of the vote tallied. He declared victory Wednesday, though The Associated Press has not yet called the race. Ossoff said in a video message shared on social media platforms that passing COVID-19 relief would be his top priority. “I want to thank the people of Georgia for participating in this election,” he said. “Whether you were for me or against me, I will be for you in the U.S. Senate.”

Neither Loeffler nor Perdue, whose term expired earlier this week, have conceded their races. Loeffler early Wednesday morning said she won’t concede until her team makes sure “that every vote is counted.” “We have a path to victory and we’re staying on it,” she said.

Biggest drop in UK new car sales since World War Two

British new car sales fell nearly 30% last year in their biggest annual drop since 1943 as lockdown measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus hit the sector, a trade industry body said Wednesday. Demand stood at 1.63 million cars in 2020, preliminary data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) showed. It was particularly hard hit by a 97% fall in April, the first full month of a national lockdown. Dealerships gradually reopened in June across the United Kingdom’s four nations. “We lost nearly three-quarters of a million units over three or four months, which we never got back,” said SMMT chief executive, Mike Hawes. Showrooms in England were closed again during a second lockdown in November, but many were better prepared with “click and collect” options, allowing more purchases, but still leading to a 27% year-on-year slump. The performance leaves new car sales at their lowest level since 1992 and suffering the biggest drop since 1943. Then, Britain was fighting World War II and industry was repurposed for the effort. Last year, the sector was also awaiting a trade deal with its biggest export market, the European Union. An agreement was reached on Dec. 24, meaning immediate tariffs and disruption were avoided, but the sector warned Wednesday of additional costs. Diesel cars accounted for around one in five sales while battery-electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles stood at a 10th. In common with other non-essential retail, the automobile sector faces the challenge of new national lockdowns announced in England and Scotland this week. The SMMT expects sales to be below 2 million this year, with the sector nervously looking ahead to March, one of the top two selling months of the year due to the change in the license plate series. “Where the industry is focussed at the moment, is what do we need to do to try to sustain sales … sustain manufacturing over the next two to three months, especially with March being such a critical month for the industry and that will undoubtedly be affected,” said Hawes.  Coronavirus vaccines could be ineffective against the highly-infectious South African mutation, a scientist who helped develop the Oxford jab has warned. Sir John Bell, regius professor of medicine at Oxford University, said the African strain is more concerning than the Kent one. Vaccines are believed to be effective against the highly-infectious UK variant VUI-202012/01 currently causing a massive spike in cases across the country. But he said the South African variant 501.V2 – detected in two locations in Britain – has ‘really pretty substantial changes in the structure of the protein’ meaning vaccines could fail to work. The Covid vaccine protects against the disease by teaching the immune system how to fight off the pathogen. It creates antibodies – disease-fighting proteins made and stored to fight off invaders in the future by latching onto their spike proteins.  But if they are unable to recognise proteins because they have mutated, it means the body may struggle to attack a virus the second time and lead to a second infection.

Sir John told Times Radio: ‘The mutations associated with the South African form are really pretty substantial changes in the structure of the protein.

‘My gut feeling is the vaccine will be still effective against the Kent strain ‘I don’t know about the South African strain – there’s a big question mark about that.’  Britain first sounded the alarm about the variant VUI-202012/01 in December after an explosion of cases were linked to the strain. Top virologists in the US since admitted the strain – which was first seen in a patient in September – could have emerged there and went undetected because America’s genomics scheme is ‘sporadic’.  Australia, Italy, Iceland, Spain and the Netherlands are among the countries who have since reported cases of the UK variant.  Other Covid strains with near-identical genetic make up have also been reported in South Africa – with strain 501.V2 – and Nigeria – who detected strain P681H.  South Africa detected 501.V2, which is feared to be more extreme than the UK’s VUI-202012/01.                Several countries have banned travellers from South Africa to try and contain the spread of the new strain, including the UK, Germany, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.  But the variant has already been detected in two locations in Britain in contacts of people who had recently visited the African nation.  On Christmas Eve, another new variant called P681H was detected in Nigeria.  Scientists say it is different to the other two but  they do not currently believe the Nigerian strain is more infectious than previous strains.   Concerns about vaccine ineffectiveness comes ahead of a major rollout of the Oxford coronavirus vaccine on Monday. Ambulances In LA Ordered Not To Transport Patients With Slim Survival Chances

The Los Angeles County Emergency Medical Services Agency (EMS) told ambulance crews not to transport patients with low chances of survival to hospitals and to try and conserve oxygen if possible, according to directives issued Monday.

With L.A. hospitals at capacity, many facilities no longer have space to take in patients who do not have a chance of survival, according to CNN. If EMS workers are unsuccessful in resuscitating a patient whose heart has stopped while in the field, the agency says the patient should not be taken to a hospital, according to the memo.“Effective immediately, due to the severe impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on EMS and 9-1-1 Receiving Hospitals, adult patients (18 years of age or older) in blunt traumatic and non traumatic out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) should not be transported [if]return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) is not achieved in the field,” the agency said.

EMS workers are ordered to try and resuscitate a patient for at least 20 minutes. If the patient is stabilized, guidelines say they can be taken to a hospital. If EMS workers are unable to restore a pulse, paramedics are directed in the memo not to transport them to a hospital. To combat the shortage of space, officials have created temporary “ambulance receiving spaces” which are set up outside emergency room entrances. EMS workers can monitor patients until resources are available. Ambulance crews are also pressured to limit their use of oxygen tanks given the shortage due to the coronavirus pandemic.  “Given the acute need to conserve oxygen, effective immediately, EMS should only administer supplemental oxygen to patients with oxygen saturation below 90%,” the memo said. Hospitals in the region “have reached a point of crisis and are having to make very tough decisions about patient care,” Dr. Christina Ghaly, the L.A. Pfizer’s Vaccine Offers Strong Protection After First Dose

WASHINGTON — The coronavirus vaccine made by Pfizer and BioNTech provides strong protection against Covid-19 within about 10 days of the first dose, according to documents published on Tuesday by the Food and Drug Administration before a meeting of its vaccine advisory group. The finding is one of several significant new results featured in the briefing materials, which include more than 100 pages of data analyses from the agency and from Pfizer. Last month, Pfizer and BioNTech announced that their two-dose vaccine had an efficacy rate of 95 percent after two doses administered three weeks apart. The new analyses show that the protection starts kicking in far earlier. What’s more, the vaccine worked well regardless of a volunteer’s race, weight or age. While the trial did not find any serious adverse events caused by the vaccine, many participants did experience aches, fevers and other side effects.

“This is what an A+ report card looks like for a vaccine,” said Akiko Iwasaki, an immunologist at Yale University.

Pfizer and BioNTech began a large-scale clinical trial in July, recruiting 44,000 people in the United States, Brazil and Argentina. Half of the volunteers got the vaccine, and half got the placebo. New coronavirus cases quickly tapered off in the vaccinated group of volunteers about 10 days after the first dose, according to one graph in the briefing materials. In the placebo group, cases kept steadily increasing. The vaccine’s swift impact could benefit not just the people who get it but the country’s strained hospitals, curbing the flow of new patients into intensive care units. Despite the early protection afforded by the first dose, it’s unclear how long that protection would last on its own, underscoring the importance of the second dose. Previous studies have found that the second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine gives the immune system a major, long-term boost, an effect seen in many other vaccines.

The efficacy of the vaccine after the first dose is about 52 percent, according to Dr. William C. Gruber, senior vice president of Pfizer Vaccine Clinical Research and Development. After the second dose, that rises to about 95 percent. “Two doses of vaccine provide maximum protection,” he said.
