‘Lock Up the Bidens,’ Trump Says at Georgia Campaign Rally

(Bloomberg) — President Donald Trump called on Friday night for Joe Biden and his family to be jailed, escalating his attacks on his Democratic opponent over unsupported accusations as he struggles to reverse his deficit in the polls. “Lock up the Bidens. Lock up Hillary,” Trump declared at a rally in Macon, Georgia, stoking the crowd that chanted “lock him up” in favor of the Democratic candidate’s imprisonment. “We’ve learned over the last couple of months: Joe Biden is a corrupt politician,” Trump said to his supporters, “and the Biden family is a criminal enterprise.” Trump frequently demanded that his 2016 Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, be incarcerated over her use of a private email server as secretary of state. It was believed to be the first time he has ever used that sort of attack against the Bidens. The FBI declined in 2016 to recommend charges against Clinton for sending a small number of classified emails through a private server at her New York home. Trailing behind Biden in most opinion polls with the election less than three weeks away,

Trump has zeroed in on a New York Post report from earlier this week that highlights documents purporting to show the business dealings of Joe Biden’s son Hunter in Ukraine and China.

The Post article, citing unverified emails from a laptop abandoned at a Delaware computer repair shop, alleged that Hunter Biden introduced a Ukrainian businessman to his father, who has said he’s never talked with his son about his international business dealings. The emails provided no proof of a meeting. The businessman, according to the article, thanked Hunter Biden for “the opportunity to meet your father.”

The Biden campaign said his calendars turned up no record that the former vice president ever met with the businessman.

The laptop’s hard drive was given to Trump ally Steve Bannon, who gave it to Rudy Giuliani’s lawyer, Robert Costello. Giuliani, the former New York mayor and Trump’s lawyer, gave it to the Post. “I have no response. Another smear campaign,” Biden said Friday when asked about the reports. The Washington Post reported Thursday that Trump was warned last year that Giuliani had become the target of Russian intelligence for an influence operation. Giuliani’s efforts to obtain disparaging information about the Bidens from Ukrainian officials contributed to Trump’s impeachment in the House of Representatives. Biden and Trump are scheduled to meet for a presidential debate in Nashville next Thursday, their final encounter of the 2020 campaign.During the rally, Trump raised the possibility of a loss to Biden, though making light of it. “I shouldn’t joke because you know what, running against the worst candidate in the history of presidential politics puts pressure on me,” he said. “Could you imagine if I lose? My whole life, what am I going to do, I’m going to say, I lost to the worst candidate in the history of politics. I’m not going to feel so good. Maybe I’ll have to leave the country, I don’t know.”  Nick Note: I  can tell you FOR SURE Biden and son are dirty. The emails are real and the Biden’s have taken the biggest bribes in US history. The Chinese investment firm  BHR Equity Investment Fund Management Co., BHR Partners has gone bankrupt and the Chinese businessman Jonathan Li is dead killed by the Chinese government. BHR has invested in a number of state-owned Chinese companies, including a subsidiary of the oil refiner Sinopec and China General Nuclear Power Group. The business focus of some of them is at odds with American policy. For example, the company invested in Face++, a division of the Chinese company Megvii, which specializes in facial recognition technology that is promoted for use by China’s police, according to a report by Human Rights Watch. BHR also invested alongside AVIC, a major state-owned aerospace and defense company that builds fighter jets for the Chinese military and in the Ukraine’s largest gas company.

McConnell: Senate to vote on $500B GOP bill Oct. 21

  • Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell blamed Democrats for the current deadlock, arguing there is enough time to pass the bill and confirm Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barret if “Democrats do not obstruct this legislation.”
  • Democrats blocked a $500 billion Republican plan in the Senate last month and are likely to dismiss the latest GOP proposal as insufficient.
  • Democrats are pushing for a much larger package. The party passed a $2.2 trillion relief bill in the House.
  • The Trump administration has proposed a $1.8 trillion package, but that offer is unpopular with Senate Republicans.
The Senate will vote on a $500 billion coronavirus stimulus bill on Wednesday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Saturday, as a larger bipartisan deal remains elusive despite continued talks between top Democrats and the Trump administration. McConnell blamed his opponents across the political aisle for the current stalemate, arguing that the Senate has enough time to pass the GOP stimulus package and confirm Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barret if “Democrats do not obstruct this legislation.” “Nobody thinks this $500B+ proposal would resolve every problem forever,” McConnell said in a statement on Saturday. “It would deliver huge amounts of additional help to workers and families right now while Washington keeps arguing over the rest.”

Democrats have accused McConnell of pushing ahead with Barrett’s confirmation instead of focusing on passing stimulus legislation. Democrats blocked a $500 billion Republican plan in the Senate last month and will likely dismiss the latest GOP proposal as insufficient. The chances of Congress passing new aid before the Nov. 3 presidential election have dimmed as the Senate GOP plan is more limited than what the Trump administration or Democrats have proposed. The GOP bill will include funding for schools, expanded unemployment benefits and a second round of the Paycheck Protection Program, McConnell said. The Senate will vote on the bill a day after a standalone vote on more PPP funds on Tuesday. Earlier this month, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin offered House Speaker Nancy Pelosi a $1.8 trillion stimulus deal, about $400 billion less than the bill proposed by House Democrats earlier this month. Pelosi, whose party passed a $2.2 trillion relief bill in the House, dismissed the White House proposal and said it “amounted to one step forward, two steps back.” Senate Republicans, on the other hand, oppose the White House package as too large. Pelosi and Mnuchin continued their negotiations this week, though they were unable to reach an agreement. Both sides characterized the talks as productive but said major differences remain. Congress hasn’t pushed through new relief legislation in months as the coronavirus worsens across the U.S. and millions of Americans remain unemployed. UN’s Guterres: World failing COVID-19 test

“The COVID-19 pandemic is a major global challenge for the entire international community, for multilateralism and for me, as secretary-general of the United Nations,” Guterres told Portuguese news agency Lusa. “Unfortunately it is a test that, so far, the international community is failing.” He said that if coordinated measures were not taken, “a microscopic virus could push millions of people into poverty and hunger, with devastating economic effects in the years to come”. Guterres also criticised countries for a lack of unity in trying to solve other global challenges including the conflicts in Afghanistan, Yemen and Syria. “It is a source of enormous frustration,” he said. More than 39 million people have been infected by COVID-19, according to a Reuters tally based on official disclosures. Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019. Nick Note: this has not begun to get ugly yet. European nations smash Covid-19 records as WHO warns daily deaths could surpass April peak

London (CNN)Concern is mounting in Europe as countries smash records for daily coronavirus cases and the World Health Organization warns that the daily death toll on the continent could reach five times its April peak within months. Countries that managed to contain infection rates through spring lockdowns and began relaxing measures are watching the virus return with a vengeance, with Germany, France and the Czech Republic all reporting record case numbers in the past two days. “The fall/winter surge continues to unfold in Europe with exponential increases in daily cases and matching percentage increases in daily deaths,” WHO Europe director Hans Kluge told a news briefing Thursday. He said the situation was of “great concern,” with daily case numbers and hospital admissions up and the region registering its highest weekly incidence of Covid-19 cases — almost 700,000 — since the beginning of the pandemic. “Projections from reliable epidemiological models are not optimistic,” warned Kluge. “These models indicate that prolonged relaxing policies could propel — by January 2021 — daily mortality at levels 4 to 5 times higher than what we recorded in April.” He said that simple measures such as social distancing and ensuring more of the population wear masks could save up to 281,000 lives in Europe by February 1. Across the bloc, less than 60% of citizens were systematically wearing masks, while 95% compliance was needed, he added. Europe’s tally of new cases in its five most-affected countries — which together have a similar population to the US — was nearly 42% greater than the increase in the US in the week to October 13. JHU’s seven-day rolling average of new cases in the US stood at 49,542 on October 13, compared with an average daily rise rise of 70,158 in France, the UK, Russia, Spain and the Netherlands. The population of the five European countries is 343 million; the US population is 331 million. France set a new record for daily coronavirus cases Thursday with 30,621 new confirmed cases in 24 hours, according to data released by the French Health Authority. That brings France’s total number of confirmed cases to 809,684. An additional 88 deaths brings fatalities to 33,125. It comes as Paris and nine other French cities prepare for a nighttime curfew starting at midnight local time on Friday. The curfew will be in place from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. every night for at least four weeks. The offices of Olivier Veran and several other officials were searched Thursday. A series of searches took place Thursday at the homes and offices of French health minister Olivier Véran, the director of the country’s national health agency Jerome Salomon and the homes of former members of the government, including former prime minister Edouard Philippe. The searches came as part of a judicial investigation into the management of the coronavirus crisis in France, a spokesperson for senior public prosecutor Francois Molins told CNN. The investigation into alleged “failure to combat a disaster” was opened following a number of official complaints by non-profit groups and a doctors’ collective. According to the prosecutor’s office, searches were also conducted at the homes or offices of former health minister Agnes Buzyn and former government spokeswoman Sibeth Ndiaye, who left the French government in a July cabinet reshuffle. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is also under pressure after introducing a three-tier Covid alert system in England, emphasizing localized measures, despite calls from the opposition for a two-week “circuit breaker” national lockdown. Leaders in Greater Manchester spoke out against plans to place the region in the “very high” Tier 3 top category. Andy Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester, said he and other northwest regions “unanimously oppose government plans for Tier 3 lockdowns.” He said the plans were “flawed and unfair” and that the government was “asking us to gamble our residents’ jobs, homes and business and a large chunk of our economy on a strategy that their own experts tell them might not work.” The Office for National Statistics estimated that one in every 240 people in England had the virus in the week from September 25 to October 1, and that the numbers infected were doubling every seven to 12 days, according to a press release from the UK’s health department. Other European countries, such as Poland, Belgium and the Czech Republic, have also seen sharp increases in Covid-19 infections in recent weeks. Poland reported new cases surging to 8,099 on Thursday — a 24% increase on Wednesday’s record 6,526 cases. According to CNN’s analysis of Belgium’s figures, the rolling average rose from 3,433 new cases a day to 5,421 between October 4 and October 11. The Czech Republic, which had managed to effectively contain the virus early on in the pandemic, broke its record for new infections for a second day running on Friday with 9,721 cases in 24 hours. It now has a higher infection rate over a 14-day notification period than any other European member state, reporting 610 cases per 100,000 people, according to figures from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. Germany also broke its record for new coronavirus infections for a second day in a row Friday, according to the country’s disease control agency, the Robert Koch Institute. Authorities reported 7,334 new infections in 24 hours, about 700 more than the 6,638 record set on the previous day. Germany recorded 24 new deaths, bringing the total number to 9,734 since the pandemic started. The number of coronavirus patients in intensive care is also on the rise. Official data on Thursday showed 655 patients in intensive care units with 329 being ventilated. A week earlier only 487 had been in ICU. Italy recorded 8,804 new infections Thursday — its highest daily increase in coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, according to figures from its health ministry. Schools in the Italian region of Campania are to be online only for two weeks from Friday, its governor announced Thursday. Nick Note: this is the second wave. Hunter Biden email about Chinese firm verified

Hunter Biden pursued lucrative deals involving China’s largest private energy company — including one that he said would be “interesting for me and my family,” emails obtained by The Post show. One email sent to Biden on May 13, 2017, with the subject line “Expectations,” included details of “remuneration packages” for six people involved in an unspecified business venture. Biden was identified as “Chair / Vice Chair depending on agreement with CEFC,” an apparent reference to the former Shanghai-based conglomerate CEFC China Energy Co. His pay was pegged at “850” and the email also noted that “Hunter has some office expectations he will elaborate.” In addition, the email outlined a “provisional agreement” under which 80 percent of the “equity,” or shares in the new company, would be split equally among four people whose initials correspond to the sender and three recipients, with “H” apparently referring to Biden. The deal also listed “10 Jim” and “10 held by H for the big guy?” Neither Jim nor the “big guy” was identified further. The email’s author, James Gilliar of the international consulting firm J2cR, also noted, “I am happy to raise any detail with Zang if there is [sic] shortfalls ?” “Zang” is an apparent reference to Zang Jian Jun, the former executive director of CEFC China. The email is contained in a trove of data that the owner of a computer repair shop in Delaware said was recovered from a MacBook Pro laptop that was dropped off in April 2019 and never retrieved. The computer was seized by the FBI, and a copy of its contents made by the shop owner shared with The Post this week by former Mayor Rudy ­Giuliani. Another email — sent by Biden as part of an Aug. 2, 2017, chain — involved a deal he struck with the since-vanished chairman of CEFC, Ye Jianming, for half-ownership of a holding company that was expected to provide Biden with more than $10 million a year. Ye, who had ties to the Chinese military and intelligence service, hasn’t been seen since being taken into custody by Chinese authorities in early 2018, and CEFC went bankrupt earlier this year, according to reports. Biden wrote that Ye had sweetened the terms of an earlier, three-year consulting contract with CEFC that was to pay him $10 million annually “for introductions alone.” Nick Note: This is a big shit. President Trump joked that he would “have to leave the country” if he loses the upcoming presidential election against Democratic nominee Joe Biden.  “I will deliver optimism, opportunity and hope, and that’s what we’re doing, and this is why we have this kind of spirit, and I hate to say it because I don’t want to insult Georgia, but it’s this way all over our country,” Trump told a cheering crowd at a campaign event in Macon, Ga., on Friday, later mocking the social distancing and face coverings at Biden’s campaign events. Trump added: “I shouldn’t joke because you know what? Running against the worst candidate in the history of presidential politics puts pressure on me. Could you imagine if I lose? My whole life, what am I going to do? I’m going to say ‘I lost to the worst candidate in the history of politics.’ I’m not going to feel so good.”

“Maybe I’ll have to leave the country? I don’t know.” Trump added.

Trump told a crowd of supporters at a campaign rally in North Carolina last month that “If I lose to him, I don’t know what I’m going to do. I will never speak to you again.” Biden’s campaign featured the president’s comments in its own video on social media.

“I’m not sure you’re ever going to see me there. I don’t think I’m going to lose, but if I do, I don’t think you’re ever going to see me again, folks. I think I’ll go to Turnberry and play golf or something,” he said at the time. Nick Note: Trump is the reality show president. To get as far as he has proves he is a master of the game. Trump campaign manager doubts he’ll win election – report

Three senior Trump advisers who recently talked to campaign manager Bill Stepien walked away believing he thinks they will lose.

The big picture: The Trump campaign is filled with internal blaming and pre-spinning of a potential loss, accelerating a dire mood that’s driven by a daily barrage of bleak headlines, campaign and White House officials tell me.

  • “A lot of this is the president himself,” one adviser said. “You can’t heal a patient who doesn’t want to take the diagnosis.”

Behind the scenes: In weekly pep talks, Stepien tells staff members why they shouldn’t pay attention to the perennially horrible public polls — and how they can “win the week” and the campaign.

  • But in other private conversations, described by multiple sources, Stepien can seem darkly pessimistic. He likens the campaign to an airplane flying through turbulence, saying: “It’s our job to safely land the plane.”
  • Three sources who have heard Stepien use variations of the airplane analogy say they sensed he was deeply, perhaps irretrievably pessimistic about the state of the race.
  • “It’s not a great feeling when you get the sense the campaign manager doesn’t deep down think we’re going to win,” one campaign source said.

Stepien pushed back strongly on that, telling me on Friday morning: “With each day closer to November 3, our campaign data presents a clear pathway to 270 for the President that provides me more confidence than ever in President Trump’s re-election.”

  • “Our campaign knows how President Trump was elected in 2016 and more importantly, we know exactly how he’s going to do it again,” Stepien added.

Why it matters: Trump can still win. But make no mistake: Even his most loyal supporters, including those paid to believe, keep telling us he’s toast — and could bring Republican control of the Senate down with him.

Between the lines: Stepien’s critics say he is in CYA mode, refusing to make tough decisions that might incur Trump’s wrath while setting up excuses for what polls suggest could be a shellacking by Joe Biden.

  • But Stepien’s defenders tell me the campaign sees several remaining paths to victory, and note that it’s hardly his fault when the president insists on actions like taking a joyride with the Secret Service while infected by COVID-19.
  • They added that it’s also hardly Stepien’s fault that Trump continues to attack his public health officials and present views that are out of step with public opinion — such as his denigration of the basic safety act of wearing a mask.
  • He’s also dealing with a money shortage, driven by heavy early spending by his predecessor, Brad Parscale, who was demoted this summer.

Several campaign officials say they don’t have a clear sense what Stepien’s strategy is to get to 270 electoral votes.

  • In internal conversations, Stepien and other senior officials often use the word “optionality” to describe the decision to keep dabbling in every Rust Belt battleground and preserve multiple paths to 270.
  • Critics hear “optionality” as a cover for indecision, keeping small pots of money spread across numerous states rather than picking a path and committing to it.

One campaign adviser pointed to a “half-assed” advertising buy in Wisconsin this week, around $130,000 according to Advertising Analytics data, which two campaign sources said seemed pointless given it’s too small to move the needle.

  • Ditto the decision to stay on the air in Minnesota, a state that no one I spoke to sees as part of Trump’s path to 270.
  • But Stepien’s dilemma, as described by several advisers, is that Trump would inevitably blow up at him if he were to read newspaper stories that he was going off the air in a Rust Belt battleground.

The other side: Defending Stepien, two senior officials said he was staying on air in Wisconsin and Minnesota because their data are still showing them these states could turn in Trump’s favor.

  • “The notion will be, probably at some point in the next week we’ll be making some decisions on where we place our bets and how we do it,” one of the senior officials said.
  • “But the cool thing about the president is he’s going to be everywhere in the last two weeks” — and family members like Don Junior and Ivanka are “also going to be everywhere.”

What’s new: In reporting out this story, Axios learned that Stepien has described to some colleagues that he sees at least three pathways to 270 electoral votes.

  • Stepien tells them the “easy part” is winning Ohio, Florida, Georgia, Iowa and Maine’s second congressional district. From there, the first pathway, and the one he views as most likely, is for Trump to win Arizona, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania.
  • His second pathway would be for Trump to win Arizona, North Carolina and Michigan.
  • And pathway three — the one Stepien views as least likely of the options — does not include Arizona but involves Trump winning North Carolina, Michigan and Nevada.
  • Those states are where Trump will be spending the vast bulk of his time between now and Nov. 3, and where the Trump campaign is spending most of its money.
  • The states in none of Stepien’s three scenarios: Wisconsin or Minnesota.

Senior officials’ defense of continuing to spend money in Wisconsin and Minnesota is that staying on air with small buys in these states preserves their options, recognizing that, as in 2016, votes can move quickly in the final days.

What’s next: Over the past two weeks, Jared Kushner has been casting about outside of the campaign for fresh ideas on tactics, strategy and messaging. A senior campaign source said he always does this, and that nothing should be read into it beyond him gathering the best information and trying to bring everyone together.

  • During the past week, Trump asked at least one confidant whether they think he needs to make any changes on his campaign.
  • But nobody I’ve spoken to seriously thinks any major personnel changes will be made at this late stage in the race.

The bottom line: “In terms of really changing the trajectory of the race,” said one campaign source, “there’s only one person, from either side, who can do that. And that’s Trump.”
