Trump, Biden teams debate next debate: Next week? Never?

WASHINGTON (AP) — The fate of the final debates between President Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden was thrown into uncertainty Thursday as the campaigns offered dueling proposals for moving forward with a process that has been upended by the president’s coronavirus infection. By Thursday afternoon, it was unclear when or how the next debates would proceed, or whether voters would even get to see the two men running for the White House on the same stage again before Election Day. The whipsaw day began with an announcement from the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates, which said the next debate on Oct. 15 would be held virtually. The commission cited health concerns following Trump’s infection as the reason for changing the structure of the town hall-style debate. Trump, who is eager to return to the campaign trail despite uncertainty about his health, said he wouldn’t participate if the debate wasn’t in person. Biden suggested the event be delayed a week until Oct. 22, which is when the third and final debate is already scheduled. Trump then countered again, agreeing to a debate on Oct. 22 — but only if face to face — and asking that a third contest be added on Oct. 29, just before the election. But Biden rejected holding a debate that late in the campaign. The commission, which has the unenviable task of finding common ground between the competing campaigns, did not weigh in on any of the new proposals. The organization has come under scrutiny already during this election after the first debate between Trump and Biden deteriorated, with the president frequently interrupting his opponent and the moderator unable to take control. For Trump, who is recovering from COVID-19 at the White House after spending three days in the hospital, the changes are an unwelcome disruption to his effort to shift focus away from a virus that has killed more than 210,000 Americans this year. In an interview with Fox Business anchor Maria Bartiromo shortly after the commission’s announcement, Trump insisted he was in “great shape” and called the idea of a virtual debate a “joke.”

“I’m not going to do a virtual debate,” he declared.

The president’s campaign manager, Bill Stepien, said Trump would stage a rally rather than debate next Thursday, though it’s not yet clear if he will be well enough to do that. With less than four weeks until Election Day and with millions of voters casting early ballots, pressure is building on Trump to turn around a campaign that is trailing Biden nationally and in most battlegrounds, where the margin is narrower. A debate before an audience of tens of millions of television viewers could provide that reset. But another debate could also expose Trump to political risks. GOP strategists say the party’s support began eroding after his seething performance against Biden last week when he didn’t clearly denounce a white supremacist group. Trump’s apparent unwillingness to change his style to win back voters he needs — particularly women — was on display again Thursday during his Fox Business interview when he referred to Democratic vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris as a “monster.” This would not be the first time Trump has skipped a debate. During the 2016 Republican primary, he boycotted the last debate before Iowa’s first-in-the nation’s caucuses, holding a fundraiser for veterans instead — a move he later speculated may have contributed to his loss in the state. Boarding a flight to campaign in Arizona on Thursday, Biden said it would be “irresponsible” for him to comment on Trump’s debate decision.

“We don’t know what the president’s going to do,” Biden said. “He changes his mind every second.”

It was unclear whether Biden would attend the debate by himself or whether the event would be fully scrapped. His deputy campaign manager, Kate Bedingfield, simply said Biden “looks forward to speaking directly to the American people.” Trump was still contagious with the virus when he was discharged from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Monday, but his doctors have not provided any detailed update on his status. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, those with mild to moderate symptoms of COVID-19 can be contagious for as many as — and should isolate for at least — 10 days. Biden has repeatedly tested negative for the virus since the debate, including another test that was administered on Thursday. Nick Note: You see Trumps erratic behavior. Trump: Discussing airline relief, $1,200 checks

President Donald Trump pushed for more coronavirus relief Wednesday after abruptly calling off talks a day earlier — further muddling the administration’s messaging as millions remain unemployed and key industries falter. In an interview on “Fox & Friends,” White House chief of staff Mark Meadows said that he and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin were actively considering a stimulus measure aimed at distributing checks to Americans while providing aid to airlines and small businesses. The remarks from Meadows — who, along with Mnuchin, has served as one of Trump’s top negotiators on Capitol Hill — came just hours after the president announced that he was postponing talks to secure a new economic aid package until after the November election.

“The president [has] already been on the phone this morning talking to Secretary Mnuchin,” Meadows said Wednesday. “The secretary and I have been talking about what we could do with stand-alone bills to help airlines, small businesses and the American people, with stimulus checks. So, hopefully, we can convince Speaker Pelosi to do something on a stand-alone basis.” Trump’s decision Tuesday to abandon stimulus negotiations sent the stock market into a downward slide. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell had warned earlier in the day that if Congress and the White House did not do more to boost the economy, it could lead to “unnecessary hardship” — a view Trump now appears to endorse. Speaker Nancy Pelosi had proposed at least $2.4 trillion in stimulus, but Trump said he would not agree to a deal of more than $1.6 trillion. “I am rejecting their … request, and looking to the future of our Country,” he tweeted Tuesday afternoon after a phone call with Mnuchin and Republican congressional leaders. But later Tuesday night, Trump reversed course and seemingly sought to restart relief talks, tweeting that Congress should “IMMEDIATELY” authorize billions of dollars in spending to support airlines and small businesses. He also tweeted that he would approve a measure to send Americans $1,200 checks amid the pandemic. The president confused matters further Wednesday morning, minutes after Meadows’ interview, when he tweeted at Pelosi: “Move Fast, I Am Waiting To Sign!” Although talks between the speaker and the White House have stalled, her discussions with Mnuchin intensified last week. Pelosi spokesperson Drew Hammill tweeted that Mnuchin asked the speaker about a standalone airlines bill Wednesday morning, but the she “reminded him that Republicans blocked that bill on Friday & asked him to review the DeFazio bill so that they could have an informed conversation.” Pelosi, in an interview on ABC’s “The View” on Wednesday, suggested that Trump may have realized the political downside to halting negotiations, though “it’s hard to see any clear, sane path in anything that he’s doing.” Pelosi and congressional Democrats have previously expressed opposition to a piecemeal stimulus proposal, arguing it does not meet the mammoth needs of an economy still reeling from the effects of Covid-19 restrictions and unemployed workers. Millions have lost their jobs, and the coronavirus has claimed the lives of more than 200,000 Americans. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell also would face difficulty convincing his GOP caucus to get on board with a big, last-minute agreement, as he remains focused on the confirmation of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court. But some vulnerable Republicans, including Maine Sen. Susan Collins and New York Rep. John Katko, broke with the president over ending talks, with Katko urging Trump to rethink his decision. Dire Warning From The New England Journal of Medicine

Covid-19 has created a crisis throughout the world. This crisis has produced a test of leadership. With no good options to combat a novel pathogen, countries were forced to make hard choices about how to respond. Here in the United States, our leaders have failed that test. They have taken a crisis and turned it into a tragedy. The magnitude of this failure is astonishing. According to the Johns Hopkins Center for Systems Science and Engineering,1 the United States leads the world in Covid-19 cases and in deaths due to the disease, far exceeding the numbers in much larger countries, such as China. The death rate in this country is more than double that of Canada, exceeds that of Japan, a country with a vulnerable and elderly population, by a factor of almost 50, and even dwarfs the rates in lower-middle-income countries, such as Vietnam, by a factor of almost 2000. Covid-19 is an overwhelming challenge, and many factors contribute to its severity. But the one we can control is how we behave. And in the United States we have consistently behaved poorly. We know that we could have done better. China, faced with the first outbreak, chose strict quarantine and isolation after an initial delay. These measures were severe but effective, essentially eliminating transmission at the point where the outbreak began and reducing the death rate to a reported 3 per million, as compared with more than 500 per million in the United States. Countries that had far more exchange with China, such as Singapore and South Korea, began intensive testing early, along with aggressive contact tracing and appropriate isolation, and have had relatively small outbreaks. And New Zealand has used these same measures, together with its geographic advantages, to come close to eliminating the disease, something that has allowed that country to limit the time of closure and to largely reopen society to a prepandemic level. In general, not only have many democracies done better than the United States, but they have also outperformed us by orders of magnitude. Why has the United States handled this pandemic so badly? We have failed at almost every step. We had ample warning, but when the disease first arrived, we were incapable of testing effectively and couldn’t provide even the most basic personal protective equipment to health care workers and the general public. And we continue to be way behind the curve in testing.

While the absolute numbers of tests have increased substantially, the more useful metric is the number of tests performed per infected person, a rate that puts us far down the international list, below such places as Kazakhstan, Zimbabwe, and Ethiopia, countries that cannot boast the biomedical infrastructure or the manufacturing capacity that we have.2

Moreover, a lack of emphasis on developing capacity has meant that U.S. test results are often long delayed, rendering the results useless for disease control. Although we tend to focus on technology, most of the interventions that have large effects are not complicated. The United States instituted quarantine and isolation measures late and inconsistently, often without any effort to enforce them, after the disease had spread substantially in many communities. Our rules on social distancing have in many places been lackadaisical at best, with loosening of restrictions long before adequate disease control had been achieved. And in much of the country, people simply don’t wear masks, largely because our leaders have stated outright that masks are political tools rather than effective infection control measures. The government has appropriately invested heavily in vaccine development, but its rhetoric has politicized the development process and led to growing public distrust. The United States came into this crisis with enormous advantages. Along with tremendous manufacturing capacity, we have a biomedical research system that is the envy of the world. We have enormous expertise in public health, health policy, and basic biology and have consistently been able to turn that expertise into new therapies and preventive measures. And much of that national expertise resides in government institutions. Yet our leaders have largely chosen to ignore and even denigrate experts. The response of our nation’s leaders has been consistently inadequate. The federal government has largely abandoned disease control to the states. Governors have varied in their responses, not so much by party as by competence. But whatever their competence, governors do not have the tools that Washington controls. Instead of using those tools, the federal government has undermined them. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which was the world’s leading disease response organization, has been eviscerated and has suffered dramatic testing and policy failures. The National Institutes of Health have played a key role in vaccine development but have been excluded from much crucial government decision making. And the Food and Drug Administration has been shamefully politicized,3 appearing to respond to pressure from the administration rather than scientific evidence.

Our current leaders have undercut trust in science and in government,4 causing damage that will certainly outlast them. Instead of relying on expertise, the administration has turned to uninformed “opinion leaders” and charlatans who obscure the truth and facilitate the promulgation of outright lies.

Let’s be clear about the cost of not taking even simple measures. An outbreak that has disproportionately affected communities of color has exacerbated the tensions associated with inequality. Many of our children are missing school at critical times in their social and intellectual development. The hard work of health care professionals, who have put their lives on the line, has not been used wisely. Our current leadership takes pride in the economy, but while most of the world has opened up to some extent, the United States still suffers from disease rates that have prevented many businesses from reopening, with a resultant loss of hundreds of billions of dollars and millions of jobs. And more than 200,000 Americans have died. Some deaths from Covid-19 were unavoidable. But, although it is impossible to project the precise number of additional American lives lost because of weak and inappropriate government policies, it is at least in the tens of thousands in a pandemic that has already killed more Americans than any conflict since World War II.

Anyone else who recklessly squandered lives and money in this way would be suffering legal consequences. Our leaders have largely claimed immunity for their actions. But this election gives us the power to render judgment.

Reasonable people will certainly disagree about the many political positions taken by candidates. But truth is neither liberal nor conservative. When it comes to the response to the largest public health crisis of our time, our current political leaders have demonstrated that they are dangerously incompetent. We should not abet them and enable the deaths of thousands more Americans by allowing them to keep their jobs. Nick Note: the wheels have flow off the cart. The horse has no rider. 34 people connected to White House, more than previously known, infected by coronavirus: Internal FEMA memo

The coronavirus outbreak has infected “34 White House staffers and other contacts” in recent days, according to an internal government memo, an indication that the disease has spread among more people than previously known in the seat of American government. Dated Wednesday and obtained by ABC News, the memo was distributed among senior leadership at FEMA, a branch of the Department of Homeland Security and the agency responsible for managing the continuing national response to the public health disaster. The memo also notes that a senior adviser to the president is among those infected. Hope Hicks and Stephen Miller, both senior aides to the president, have tested positive in recent days.

The new figures underscore both the growing crisis in the White House and the lengths to which government officials have gone to block information about the outbreak’s spread.

ABC News had previously reported that a total of 24 White House aides and their contacts had contracted the virus. It was not clear in the FEMA memo with the larger number what “other contacts” referred to. Nick Note: the White House of Plague is a super spreader center. Trump has proven he is a colossal fuck up. When President Donald Trump returned to the White House on Tuesday, he immediately removed his mask before entering the building — setting off concern that his behavior may put staffers, complex workers and Secret Service agents at risk.

On Tuesday, White House Communications Director Alyssa Farah said the White House was “taking precautions” to stem the spread and that those still working in the West Wing “feel comfortable.”

But on Wednesday, images emerged showing several White House aides interacting in close proximity with one another without masks.

White House Security Official Contracted Covid-19 in September

He is in charge of the White House security office, which handles credentialing for access to the White House and works closely with the U.S. Secret Service on security measures throughout the compound. A career federal employee who has seldom appeared in the news, Bailey was swept up in a controversy last year over security clearances granted to Trump’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, and son-in-law Jared Kushner. Bailey privately testified to the House Oversight Committee that he didn’t face pressure from others at the White House to grant clearances, according to a report by The Hill. Nick Note: we will never know how many people have become infected in the White house. But its a hell of a lot, One of the biggest super spreader event is the White House. Here is the problem you cannot fix a problem that you don’t believe exists. Its called denial. Its so bad that Trump got infected who was saved from the very plague he called the mild flu almost died. Herculean efforts and hundreds of millions of dollars  in intervention and experimental drugs you and i could not get our hands on saved him. Fauci: As many as 400,000 Americans could die from coronavirus

Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious diseases expert, said Tuesday that as many as 400,000 Americans could die from COVID-19 if action isn’t taken in the fall and winter. Fauci told attendees of a virtual event held by American University that between 300,000 and 400,000 could die from coronavirus in the country. “The models tell us if we don’t do what we need to in the fall and winter, we could have 300,000-400,000 COVID-19 deaths,” American University quoted the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases as saying.

Fauci’s prediction goes beyond a University of Washington study from August that said as many as 300,000 people could die of COVID-19 by Dec. 1. As of Wednesday morning, the U.S. has recorded 210,918 deaths and more than 7.5 million confirmed infections of COVID-19, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.  Fauci also asserted on Tuesday that a vaccine will probably not be available to most Americans until next summer or the fall, aligning with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield’s Senate testimony last month. Fauci said during an event on Monday that this means life may not return to normal until the end of next year. At the American University virtual event, Fauci acknowledged the decreasing trust in him as a public official, especially among Republicans and those who believe the country needs to reopen fully.  “Maybe 50 percent of you hate me because you think I’m trying to destroy the country, but listen to me for six weeks or so, and do what I say, and you’ll see the numbers go down,” Fauci pleaded, according to the university.

His comments come after President Trump announced a positive coronavirus test last week and spent three nights in Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for treatment. Trump struggling to breathe, White House aides say

Footage suggests Trump was short of breath during maskless photo op at White House

President Trump isn’t the picture of health he’s making himself out to be, White House aides tell The New York Times. After returning from Walter Reed Medical Center on Monday after his COVID-19 diagnosis and three-day stay, Trump removed his face mask defiantly before entering the White House. Aides say it was supposed to be Trump’s display of strength after his hospital visit, even though it put everyone around him at risk because he was still contagious with the virus. “But they also wondered if the face covering was making it harder for the president to breathe,” the Times reports. The next day, aides said Trump’s voice was stronger than it had been the night before, “but at times he still sounded as if he was trying to catch air,” the Times writes. Aides, including White House Communications Director Alyssa Farah, publicly said they were “comfortable working here” as more and more White House workers tested positive for the virus. They brought in masks, gloves, and eye protection for anyone planning to work closely with Trump, including in the Oval Office. “But many saw the situation as spiraling out of control” as the pandemic Trump brushed off “seemed to have locked its grip on the White House,” the Times writes. And as polls continued to show Democratic nominee Joe Biden triumphing over Trump, aides were reportedly “worried that they were living through the final days of the Trump administration.”  Nick Note: Trump is sick! Senior Pentagon leadership quarantining after exposure to coronavirus

(CNN)The top US general, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mark Milley, and several members of the Pentagon’s senior leadership are quarantining after a top Coast Guard official tested positive for coronavirus, several US defense officials tell CNN. The Pentagon is “conducting additional contact tracing and taking appropriate precautions to protect the force and the mission,” after vice commandant of the US Coast Guard, Adm. Charles Ray, tested positive on Monday, according to Jonathan Hoffman, assistant to the secretary of defense for public affairs.

Despite efforts by the Pentagon to stress that military leaders can carry on business as usual from quarantine, the prospect of the virus spreading among senior officials who work in one of the world’s largest office buildings will likely raise major national security questions, particularly as it follows a major outbreak in the White House that hospitalized President Donald Trump and after three Republican senators tested positive in recent days.
Trump mounts bizarre and misleading White House return despite warnings

We are aware that Vice Commandant Ray has tested positive for COVID-19 and that he was at the Pentagon last week for meetings with other senior military leaders. Some meeting attendees included other Service Chiefs,” Hoffman said in a statement Tuesday. “Out of an abundance of caution, all potential close contacts from these meetings are self-quarantining and have been tested this morning. No Pentagon contacts have exhibited symptoms and we have no additional positive tests to report at this time,” he added. The Coast Guard is also taking precautions after Ray tested positive, “following established policies for COVID, per CDC guidelines, to include quarantine and contact tracing,” the service announced Tuesday.
“According to CDC guidelines, any Coast Guard personnel that were in close contact will also quarantine. In accordance with established Coast Guard COVID policies, Admiral Ray will be quarantining from home,” the statement said.
Secretary of Defense Mark Esper is not quarantining after returning from an overseas trip on Sunday. He participated in an event with his Bulgarian counterpart on Tuesday.

Close contact with senior Pentagon leaders

Ray was at the White House on September 27 for the Gold Star Mothers Event, the Coast Guard confirmed to CNN. Milley also attended .
Additionally, Ray was at the Pentagon on Friday and recently attended several meetings in secure areas with other members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff who are the military’s most senior generals. Multiple defense officials tell CNN that senior Pentagon leadership who had been in proximity to Ray have been tested and are awaiting results.
The self-quarantining by senior leadership goes beyond the Joints Chiefs staff due to exposure at multiple meetings in recent days, including a meeting in the Pentagon’s secure meeting space for classified information known as “the tank,” the defense official said. All but one member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is now self-quarantining and they have tested negative as of Tuesday afternoon with none currently having symptoms, the official added. The commandant of the Marine Corps was not in the meetings with Ray; his deputy was in attendance. As a precaution, Milley is working from home, a defense official says. As Trump’s top military adviser, he maintains a full classified communications suite in his house, the official said.
The chief of staff of the US Air Force, Charles Brown, the chief of naval operations, Adm. Michael Gilday, and the chief of space operations, Gen. John Raymond, also are all working from home, according to several officials.
Additional officials working from alternate locations or from home include:
  • Gen. John Hyten, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff;
  • Gen. James McConville, chief of staff of the Army;
  • Gen. Daniel Hokanson, chief of the National Guard;
  • Gen. Paul Nakasone, commander of US Cyber Command and director of the National Security Agency;
  • Gen. Gary Thomas, assistant commandant of the US Marine Corps,

White House adviser Stephen Miller tests positive for COVID-19

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – White House senior adviser Stephen Miller said he had tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday, the latest case of coronavirus reported among Donald Trump’s inner circle since the Republican president announced he had the virus last week. “Over the last 5 days I have been working remotely and self-isolating, testing negative every day through yesterday,” Miller said in a statement.”Today, I tested positive for COVID-19 and am in quarantine.” Trump returned to the White House on Monday after three nights in a military hospital, urging Americans not to be afraid and not to let the coronavirus dominate their lives. The pandemic has killed more the 210,000 people in the United States, more than any other country. White House Deputy Press Secretary Brian Morgenstern told CNN late on Tuesday that there were no new COVID cases in the White House beside Miller. Trump said on Friday that he and first lady Melania Trump had tested positive for the coronavirus. Others announcing they had tested positive in recent days include close Trump adviser Hope Hicks; White House spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany; Trump’s campaign manager Bill Stepien; and Republican Senators Mike Lee, Thom Tillis and Ron Johnson. Miller’s wife, Katie Miller, who is a spokeswoman for Vice President Mike Pence, tested positive for the virus in May. Nick Note: Trumps living in denial has turned the White house into a house of plague. Think about it. Its kind of like GOD he does not give a shit if you believe in him or not. Wall Street closes lower as Trump stops stimulus negotiations

Stocks fell on Tuesday after President Donald Trump instructed White House officials to halt negotiations on further coronavirus stimulus, sparking a sharp reversal in the major market benchmarks.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed 375.88 points lower, or 1.3%, at 27,772.76. The S&P 500 ended the day down 1.4% at 3,360.95. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.6% to 11,154.60. At 2:48 p.m., Trump tweeted: “I have instructed my representatives to stop negotiating until after the election when, immediately after I win, we will pass a major Stimulus Bill that focuses on hardworking Americans and Small Business.” The 30-stock Dow was up more than 200 points before the tweet was sent. Both the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq were also higher.  Shares of Boeing dropped 6.8% to lead the Dow lower. Amazon slid 3.1% while Facebook, Netflix, Alphabet, Microsoft and Apple all declined more than 2%. Airlines were also under pressure as the industry was hinging on additional aid to avoid more layoffs. United Airlines and Delta were down 3.7% and 2.9%, respectively. American slid 4.5% and Southwest pulled back by 2.4%. “It will now come down to who sweeps and how much stimulus we get and what it looks like under either a Republican or Democratic congress/President,” said Dennis DeBusschere, quantitative strategist at Evercore ISI. “For now … the sweep scenario clearly favors the Dems. That is why unwinding stimulus trades should not be taken too far.”

Earlier in the day, Trump participated in a call with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin where they discussed coronavirus relief. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Trump was putting “himself first at the expense of the country” by calling off the negotiations.  “Walking away from coronavirus talks demonstrates that President Trump is unwilling to crush the virus, as is required by the Heroes Act. He shows his contempt for science, his disdain for our heroes – in health care, first responders, sanitation, transportation, food workers, teachers, teachers, teachers and others – and he refuses to put money in workers’ pockets, unless his name is printed on the check,” she added.

Earlier in the day, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell once again called for additional fiscal aid, saying it is necessary for the economic recovery to continue.

“Even if policy actions ultimately prove to be greater than needed, they will not go to waste,” Powell said. “The recovery will be stronger and move faster if monetary policy and fiscal policy continue to work side by side to provide support to the economy until it is clearly out of the woods.” Stocks soared on Monday as investors grew more optimistic about President Donald Trump’s health and the possibility of additional economic relief. If ever the world needed Americas leadership it is during the plague. The teeming masses need leadership about. Isolation, disinfection and masking up.
