The first reported death in the U.S. from Covid-19 was on February 29th. Now, 7 months later, it’s hard to fathom that we have more than 200,000 reported deaths and over 6 million cases.
But the harsh reality is this: as the U.S. marks the passing of 200,000 lives based on reporting earlier today by NBC News, Covid-19 continues to kill hundreds of Americans daily— 937 yesterday, based on data from Johns Hopkins.
In fact, when Dr. Deborah Birx, coordinator of the White House coronavirus task force, made a prediction on the White House lawn on March 30th, SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for Covid-19, had killed less than 3,000 people. “If we do things together, well almost perfectly, we can get in the range of 100,000-2000,000 fatalities,” Birx offered, as she explained to Savannah Guthrie on the Today Show. “We don’t even want to see that,”, she added. But her prediction came true today as the number of deaths from Covid-19 exceeded 200,000. “It’s not surprising that the U.S. has crossed the 200,000 death mark as, over six months into the pandemic and nine months since the emergence of the virus, many parts of the U.S. are still incapable of testing, tracing, and isolating, said Amesh Adalja, M.D., an infectious disease physician, and Senior Scholar, Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. “The inability for individuals to rapidly test, know their status, and make informed decisions about their activities will continue to lead to undetected chains of transmission that eventually land on vulnerable people, so I expect the death count to continue to increase.” What’s abundantly clear is that this could have gone much differently, as Adalja clearly explains. And a robust national plan that focuses on rapid tests, contact tracing and isolation is still not in place. What’s even more concerning is that tens of thousands of people could have been saved if we had a cohesive national strategy, an earlier national lockdown, and a unified strategy that took the lives of all Americans into consideration. This could have even included a nationwide universal masking policy along with a national strategy for distribution of PPE, instead of individual states “going it alone”. Maybe part of the plan could also have included distributing 650 million masks nationwide—five reusable face masks for every American household—that were supposed to be delivered through the United States Postal Service (USPS) back in April, according to a Washington Post report yesterday, but unfortunately never happened. The documents even included a draft of a press release from the USPS to distribute the 650 million masks throughout the country. But thanks to the watchdog, American Oversight, which obtained close to 10,000 pages of federal emails and documents via the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), we now know that Americans never received the masks because the plan was never implemented. It turns out that the White House Domestic Policy Council and the Office of the Vice President thought that sending masks to households might create “concern or panic.” Rather than creating “concern”, shipping masks could have provided protection and security for a high percentage of Americans for a virus that may be transmitted asymptomatically and is airborne, based on current research. What’s clear is this: the U.S. is the current global leader in total cases and total deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins CSSE. Yet close to 3 million people will “most likely” die of Covid-19 globally by the end of the year if countries don’t place a greater focus on wearing masks and tightening restrictions on social distancing, according to data from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington. But a second wave or surge in the number of new cases in the coming fall and winter, along with progressive fatigue with social distancing and wearing masks could lead to more than 415,000 deaths in the U.S. by January 1, the IHME has projected. Certainly there has been concern about the accuracy of IHME modeling early in the pandemic, with underestimation of the number of deaths nationwide, as well as an inaccurate projected death toll made in April for August (60, 415). These projections are just that—projections. But changes in adherence to social distancing and wearing masks can make a significant difference in modeling and estimates of death. That said, we are still on the wrong trajectory. According to data from Johns Hopkins CSSE, there were 49,522 new cases and 937 deaths in the U.S yesterday. Until a viable and thoroughly tested vaccine is available, we must adhere to other public health approaches that are currently available: universal masking along with strict adherence to social distancing. Shortly before the announcement that Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg had died Friday, Sen. Lisa Murkowski said in an interview that if she was presented with a vacancy on the court, she would not vote to confirm a nominee before the election. Ginsburg died in her home in Washington D.C. at the age of 87 of complications from pancreatic cancer.
“I would not vote to confirm a Supreme Court nominee. We are 50 some days away from an election,” she said.
Murkowski said her reasoning is based on the same reasoning that held up the confirmation of former President Barack Obama’s final nominee to the Supreme Court. She also noted that months prior to the 2016 presidential election, while Obama was still president, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Americans needed to pick the next president before the Senate confirmed a new justice to the Supreme Court. “That was too close to an election, and that the people needed to decide,” Murkowski said, recalling McConnell’s argument at the time. “That the closer you get to an election, that argument becomes even more important.” President Trump is expected to try to push Ginsburg’s successor through the Republican-controlled Senate. As the price of oil begins to falter, Saudi Arabia has stepped up its rhetoric, even going as far as to warn short sellers not to bet against the price of the commodity. Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman gave “clear hints” on Thursday that there could be a change of direction in production policy forthcoming as the price of oil continues its slide, according to Bloomberg.
He said Thursday: “We will never leave this market unattended. I want the guys in the trading floors to be as jumpy as possible. I’m going to make sure whoever gambles on this market will be ouching like hell.”
At the same time, Brent was falling below $40 per barrel and the market continues to show signs of waning demand. OPEC and its allies said they would be “proactive and preemptive” in addressing the diminishing price, recommending “participating counties take further necessary measures”. Abdulaziz started a meeting on Thursday with what Bloomberg called a “forceful condemnation” of members who are pumping out too much supply. His ire may have been directed to UAE Energy Minister Suhail al Mazrouei, who attended the meeting. The UAE has been “one of the worst quota breakers” in OPEC+, only making 10% of its pledged cuts for August. Abdulaziz said: “Using tactics to over-produce and hide non-compliance have been tried many times in the past, and always end in failure. They achieve nothing and bring harm to our reputation and credibility.” “Attempts to outsmart the market will not succeed and are counterproductive when we have the eyes, and the technology, of the world upon us,” Prince Abdulaziz continued. UAE was overproducing by about 520,000 barrels per day in August and the country will try to make additional cuts in October and November to make up for past month shortcomings. Countries like Iraq and Nigeria have implemented more than 100% of their required cuts, helping give OPEC and Abdulaziz credibility. Harry Tchilinguirian, head of commodities strategy at BNP Paribas SA, concluded: ”You have to hand it to Prince Abdulaziz. Prime Minister Boris Johnson is currently considering whether to reimpose some lockdown restrictions across England. The death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg sent waves of shock across the country on Friday evening, leading to mass mourning on what would typically be a day of celebration, Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. But the news also comes just 46 days before the 2020 presidential election and immediately became politicized.
Within hours of reports of Ginsburg’s death, the donation ticker on ActBlue, a nonprofit organization that enables left-leaning nonprofits, Democrats, and progressive groups to raise money online, began increasing rapidly, with about $100,000 in donations each minute.
One group, Get Mitch or Die Trying, a fund created by Crooked Media which donates to 13 close Senate races in an attempt to flip the Congressional body from Republican-majority to Democratic-majority saw a huge increase in funding. The group reported at least $1.5 million in donations in the hour after Ginsburg’s death was made public.
The donations came in as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell made clear that he would attempt to replace Ginsburg with a Supreme Court Justice who was vetted and approved by President Donald Trump. “President Trump’s nominee will receive a vote on the floor of the United States Senate,” said McConnell in a statement Friday evening. After Supreme Court Justice Anton Scalia’s death in 2016, McConnell refused to appoint then-President Barack Obama’s Justice pick, Merrick Garland, to the court, saying that it was an election year and thus unfair. “In the last midterm election before Justice Scalia’s death in 2016, Americans elected a Republican Senate majority because we pledged to check and balance the last days of a lame-duck president’s second term. We kept our promise,” McConnell said in his statement Friday. “Since the 1880s, no Senate has confirmed an opposite-party president’s Supreme Court nominee in a presidential election year.” Democrats, meanwhile, are saying that a vote to appoint a Supreme Court Justice would be unfair and should wait until after the election on November 3. Logistically, it is unlikely that McConnell would be able to nominate and schedule a vote for the next Justice before the election. If Democrats are able to flip the Senate and potentially the White House, McConnell’s argument would become invalid, thus fueling donations for Democratic candidates. Even some Republicans question the timeline. “I’d like to fill a vacancy. But we’d have to see. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell pledged to quickly bring to a vote whomever Trump nominates.
But he faces potential division within his own ranks, including from Sens. Mitt Romney of Utah, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine and Cory Gardner of Colorado. Collins and Gardner are in particularly tight races for re-election this fall.
That’s fuelling optimism among Democrats that the vacancy could drive home the significance of the election to their base. “The implications for Senate races could be profound,” Democratic strategist Bill Burton said. “The presidential race will see some immediate churn as activists on both sides will be newly energised,” he continued.
“The persistent question will be whether huge protests around the Capitol and the country will inflame such vigorous energy that it leads to awful clashes.”
Biden, who has already pledged to appoint the first Black woman to the Supreme Court, said late Friday that “voters should pick the president and the president should pick the justice to consider”. Democrats are enraged by McConnell’s pledge to move forward, especially after he blocked President Barack Obama from appointing a justice to replace Antonin Scalia nine months before the 2016 election. We at the Supreme Court have lost a cherished colleague. Today we mourn, but with confidence that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her — a tireless and resolute champion of justice.”Despite her diminutive stature — she was reportedly only 5 feet, 1 inch tall— Ginsburg was larger than life, both on and off the bench.Viewed as a feminist icon, she broke countless barriers, dedicating her legal career to challenging laws and regulations that discriminated on the basis of sex. Along the way, she never shied away from making contentious comments, whether about her high court opinions or her octogenarian workout routines. Her refusal to hold her tongue earned her the nickname the “Notorious R.B.G.” by her rabid fan base. In her final days, according to NPR, Ginsburg dictated one final dig at President Donald Trump to her granddaughter Clara Spera, declaring, “My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed.” But hours after her death Friday night, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he has no intention of waiting and will put forward whomever Trump nominates. “President Trump’s nominee will receive a vote on the floor of the United States Senate,” McConnell said in a statement. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer hailed Ginsburg as “a champion for justice” and a “trailblazer for women” and tweeted, “The American people should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court Justice. Therefore, this vacancy should not be filled until we have a new president.”
The news broke as Trump was speaking at a rally in Minnesota. Unaware of her death, he said during his speech that “the Supreme Court is so important. The next president will get one, two, three or four Supreme Court justices.”
After learning the news, Trump told reporters, “I’m actually saddened to hear that.” “Whether you agreed or not, she was an amazing woman who led an amazing life,” Trump said. He later tweeted a statement in which he referred to Ginsburg as a “titan of the law” and a “fighter to the end.” Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, meanwhile, said Ginsburg “stood for all of us,” praising the obstacles she overcame early in her career. “She never failed. She was fierce and unflinching in her pursuit of the civil and legal rights of, the civil rights, of everyone,” he said.
