Driven by fear of war with Russia, she wants to be able to defend her family, including her 13-year-old son. Thousands of Poles like Jedruszak are signing up for voluntary military training as Poland’s army seeks to fill its ranks with professional and voluntary personnel amid escalating concerns over Russia’s military aggression. “I’d do anything to keep my child safe. And I would definitely want to fight to protect him,” said Jedruszak, dressed in military fatigues, her face painted in camouflage colours. For many in Poland – which endured decades of Moscow’s domination under the Soviet Union – the fear of Russian hostility looms large. Those concerns have only grown this week after Poland downed Russian drones in its airspace on Wednesday – the first time a member of the NATO military alliance is known to have fired shots during Russia’s war in Ukraine. Ukraine hits one of Russia’s largest oil refineries
Kiev’s military intelligence agency on Saturday confirmed that a Ukrainian drone struck one of Russia’s largest oil refineries roughly 1,400 kilometres from the Ukraine border.Head of Russia’s Bashkortostan region, Radiy Khabirov, said on Telegram that the attack caused minor damage to the refinery. “Today, Bashneft’s facility was subjected to a terrorist attack by aircraft-type drones … There were no casualties or injuries. The production site sustained minor damage, and a fire broke out, which is currently being extinguished,” he added.

Poland’s Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk announced that helicopters and fighter jets were deployed due to Russian unmanned aerial vehicles operating near the Polish border. “In connection with the operation of Russian unmanned aerial vehicles near the border of the Republic of Poland, the operational commander has decided to scramble helicopters and fighter jets. We are in constant contact with our allies,” Tomczyk wrote in X on Saturday. Russia previously stated that it did not want to escalate tensions with Poland after Warsaw and its allies accused Moscow of intentionally violating its airspace with drones. Following the incursion, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that Poland was the closest it has come to an armed conflict since World War II.
