The United States administration is unfreezeing Iran’s assets to convince Tehran to abandon the idea of charging tolls for transiting the Strait of Hormuz, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, citing people with knowledge of the matter. According to the report, negotiations were initially moving forward toward the release of the $6 billion in frozen Iranian funds held in Qatar, but Iran’s decision to block the strait and insist on banning transit through routes not approved by Tehran has led to a setback in that process. The US is currently reviewing Oman’s proposal, which stipulates that maritime services in the Strait of Hormuz would be paid through a fund financed by voluntary donations, the sources said.
