Iran has significantly increased its stockpile of uranium enriched to near weapons-grade levels, according to the Associated Press on Monday, citing a confidential report by the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). According to the report, Iran now possesses 142.1 kilograms of uranium enriched up to 60%, marking a 20.6-kilogram increase since February. Uranium enriched to 60% is a short step from the 90% purity required for weapons-grade material. Iran’s total enriched uranium stockpile has risen to 6,201.3 kilograms, an increase of 675.8 kilograms since the last IAEA report. The news also comes amidst tension in the Middle East due to the war in Gaza and possible spillovers over the region.
