Trump again warns Iran to open Strait of Hormuz

 President Donald Trump said on Monday the United States was in ​talks with a “more reasonable regime” to end ‌the war in Iran but repeated his warning to Tehran to open the Strait of Hormuz or risk U.S attacks on its oil wells ​and power plants.
“Great progress has been made ​but, if for any reason a deal is ⁠not shortly reached, which it probably will be, ​and if the Hormuz Strait is not immediately ‘Open for ​Business,’ we will conclude our lovely ‘stay’ in Iran by blowing up and completely obliterating all of their Electric Generating Plants, Oil ​Wells and Kharg Island,” Trump wrote in a ​social media post.
Trump also threatened to attack the desalination plants ‌that ⁠supply clean water in Iran. The U.S. president said last week he would pause attacks on Iran’s energy plants for 10 days, which would be until April 6, ​U.S. time. While Trump ​has said ⁠the U.S. and Iran are making progress in talks, he has also been ​sending more U.S. troops to the region, ​leading ⁠Iran’s parliament speaker to accuse Washington of sending messages about possible negotiations while planning a ground invasion, prompting ⁠more ​defiance from Tehran.

Crude oil prices rose on Monday with Brent futures jumping by more than 2% after United States President Donald Trump said that his “favorite thing” about his country’s military operation in the Middle East would be to “take the oil” from Iran, despite facing opposition in the US. Traders also kept their eyes on the developments in the Iran war, as reports signaled that Washington is preparing a ground operation that could last several weeks.

West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for May’s deliveries increased by 1.35% at 2:27 am ET to $100.99 per barrel. Meanwhile, Brent for the same month’s settlements climbed by 2.42% to $115.3 per barrel at 2:27 am ET.

Trump: My favorite thing is to take the oil in Iran

United States President Donald Trump remarked in an interview with The Financial Times that his “favorite thing” about Washington and Israel’s military campaign against Iran is “to take the oil” in that country, but that he faces opposition on the home front. Trump insisted that “some stupid people back in the US say: ‘Why are you doing that?’ But they’re stupid people.” He claimed that one of the ways to achieve such a goal would be to seize Iran’s oil hub, the Kharg Island, which the US could do “very easily.” “We have a lot of options,” Trump said. “It would also mean we had to be there for a while.”

Previously, Trump told Israel’s Channel 14 that the US is close to controlling the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump was considering sending troops to Iran to extract 1,000 pounds of the country’s uranium.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf told the semi-official Tasnim news agency “our men are waiting for American soldiers to enter on the ground.” The strait has emerged as Iran’s main source of leverage in the war, and Pakistan on Saturday said it had reached a deal with Tehran to allow 20 of its ships passage. Bahrain on Sunday announced a ban on fishing and pleasure boats at night, citing the Iranian threat. Saudi Arabia has managed to reroute some of its oil around the strait, with its East-West pipeline now operating at its full capacity of 7 million barrels a day, according to a person familiar with the matter. Meanwhile, in a sign of the conflict’s long reach, French anti-terrorism authorities are investigating a foiled bombing near the Bank of America Corp. headquarters in Paris that they said appeared to be linked to the Middle East conflict. Iran’s state-run news agency IRNA reported extensive damage to residential areas in Tehran overnight, with early reports of civilian injuries. The semi-official Fars news agency said five people were killed and two boats were hit in early Sunday attacks on a port in the southern Hormozgan province. In the city of Shaft, near the Caspian Sea, one person was killed in strikes on a residential area.

Rosatom says situation at Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant keeps deteriorating

MOSCOW, March 28 – The situation at Iran’s Bushehr nuclear ‌power plant continues to deteriorate and attacks pose a direct threat to nuclear safety, the head of Russia’s state ​nuclear corporation Rosatom said on Saturday after ​another strike near the facility. The International Atomic Energy ⁠Agency said on Friday that Iran had informed ​it of another strike in the vicinity of Bushehr, ​the third such incident in 10 days, with no damage to the operating reactor and no release of radiation reported. The ​Russian Foreign Ministry on Saturday called for “unequivocal and ​firm condemnation” of the attack near Bushehr. “We hope that, by ‌receiving ⁠timely and objective information directly from the Iranian authorities about what is happening on the ground, the Director General of the IAEA will be able ​to convey ​a simple ⁠message to the aggressors immediately and unequivocally: ‘It is time for you to stop!’,” ​its spokesperson Maria Zakharova said in a ​statement. Rosatom ⁠head Alexei Likhachev also said that 163 more of its staff from Bushehr had returned to Russia ⁠after ​an evacuation, and that two ​more groups would be evacuated in the coming days.

Nearly 30 US troops said to be injured in Saudi airbase

At least 29 United States troops have been injured at Saudi Arabia’s Prince Sultan air base over the past week, The Associated Press reported on Saturday, citing two people briefed on the matter. According to the report, at least 15 American soldiers were injured after Iran launched six ballistic missiles and 29 drones at the US air base in Saudi Arabia on Friday, with five of them being seriously injured. Additionally, 14 US troops were wounded in the two attacks on the air base that took place earlier in the week.

Meanwhile, previous reports revealed that yesterday’s attack on the air base also damaged several refueling aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
