JPMorgan estimates negative US GDP in Q1

JPMorgan economists now see an economic contraction in the first quarter due to the spreading coronavirus and related restrictions being imposed by states and cities.

The new forecast is a departure from Wall Street’s widely held view that the first quarter would be positive, with an improving economy throughout 2021.

The JPMorgan economists said they expect the economy to expand briskly in the second and third quarter, based on positive vaccine developments.

“This winter will be grim, and we believe the economy will contract again in 1Q,” the economists wrote.

They projected that the first quarter will contract by 1% after growth of 2.8% in the fourth quarter. For the second quarter, they see the economy rallying and growth of 4.5% followed by a robust 6.5% in the third quarter. The economists also expect about $1 trillion of fiscal stimulus, likely beginning near the end of the first quarter. That should help boost midyear growth. “One thing that is unlikely to change between 2020 and 2021 is that the virus will continue to dominate the economic outlook. … Case counts in the latest wave are easily surpassing the March and July waves,” the economists wrote. They noted that the economy was helped through the July outbreak by the economic reopenings. “The economy no longer has that tailwind; instead it now faces the headwind of increasing restrictions on activity. The holiday season — from Thanksgiving through New Year’s — threatens a further increase in cases,” they added. The economists also expect to see monthly declines in employment at different points over the next few months, but monthly job gains should be back in the millions around the middle of the year and then moderate again late in 2021. “We think the trends in the labor market should roughly follow what we expect for consumer spending — job growth should weaken noticeably around the turn of the year as the virus weighs on the economy, and then pick up again early next year once vaccine distribution eases virus concerns and fiscal support boosts growth,” they wrote. Nick Note: DIVE DIVE we are going down again. The dreaded double ditch recession. If they did not wipe out the first time this next plunge in the economy will take them down for good….

Human ageing reversed in ‘Holy Grail’ study, scientists say

Human ageing reversed in ‘Holy Grail’ study, scientists say

‘Ageing can, indeed, be targeted and reversed at the basic cellular-biological level,’ lead researcher says Scientists claim to have successfully reversed the biological aging process in a group of elderly adults. In a first of a kind study, researchers from Tel Aviv University and the Shamir Medical Center used a form of oxygen therapy to reverse two key indicators of biological aging: Telomere length and senescent cells accumulation. As the human body gets older, it experiences the shortening of telomeres – the protective caps found at the end of chromosomes – and an increase in old, malfunctioning senescent cells. A clinical trial involving 35 adults over the age of 64 sought to understand whether a method called Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy could prevent the deterioration of these two hallmarks of the aging process. The subjects were placed in a pressurised chamber and given pure oxygen for 90 minutes a day, five days a week for three months.

The pressurised chamber where participants were placed

At the end of the trial, the scientists reported that the participants’ telomeres had increased in length by an average of 20 per cent, while their senescent cells had been reduced by up to 37 per cent. This is the equivalent to how their bodies were at a cellular level 25 years earlier, the researchers reported. “Since telomere shortening  is considered the ‘Holy Grail’ of the biology of aging, many pharmacological and environmental interventions are being extensively explored in the hopes of enabling telomere elongation,” said Shai Efrati, a professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Sagol School of Neuroscience at Tel Aviv University, and co-author of the study. “The significant improvement of telomere length shown during and after these unique HBOT protocols provides the scientific community with a new foundation of understanding that ageing can, indeed, be targeted and reversed at the basic cellular-biological level.” It is the latest in a series of radical anti-ageing treatments, which seek to increase life expectancy and even make people look and feel younger. The idea is that ageing is a disease that can be cured just like any other. In 2015, the head of a biotech company made headlines after becoming patient zero in a novel gene therapy she claimed could make permanent changes to her DNA in order to combat muscle loss and other age-related conditions. BioViva chief executive Liz Parrish received criticism from scientists for her experimental drug trial but claims to have increased the length of her telomeres in the five years since and recently claimed that death is optional.

How telomeres shorten as a person get older

During the latest trial in Israel, the participants did not undergo any lifestyle, diet or medication adjustments, which have previously been found to have moderate effects on a person’s biological age. It is understood that instead the effects were the result of the pressurised chamber inducing a state of hypoxia, or oxygen shortage, which caused the cell regeneration. “Until now, interventions such as lifestyle modifications and intense exercise were shown to have some inhibition effect on the expected telomere length shortening,” said Dr Amir Hadanny, co-author of the study. “However, what is remarkable to note in our study, is that in just three months of therapy, we were able to achieve such significant telomere elongation – at rates far beyond any of the current available interventions or lifestyle modifications.”

The pandemic is as bad as it’s ever been Save Yourself! PLEASE!!

https://youtu.be/NHuuJboZ-I0

No state in America could clear the threshold right now to safely allow indoor gatherings.

The big picture: This is bad as the pandemic has ever been — the most cases, the most explosive growth and the greatest strain on hospitals. If businesses were closed right now, it would not be safe to reopen them. And holiday travel will be risky no matter where you’re coming from or where you’re going.

By the numbers: Over the past week, the U.S. averaged more than 154,000 new cases per day, the highest rate of the entire pandemic.

  • The number of new infections rose in 46 states, held steady in three, and declined in only one — Hawaii.
  • This week’s nationwide totals are a 30% increase over last week, which was a 40% increase over the week before that. Daily infections have been rising by at least 15% for the past six weeks.
  • Testing was up about 11% over the past week. The U.S. is now conducting about 1.5 million tests per day. That’s a lot, but cases clearly are still rising faster than testing.

Between the lines: Whatever metric you might use to decide whether it’s safe to have a large Thanksgiving get-together, or to sit inside a bar or restaurant, the answer is probably no.

  • Experts recently told The Atlantic that they wouldn’t feel comfortable attending an indoor dinner party at all, but that it would be least risky in areas with only about 10-25 new cases per day, per 100,000 people.
  • At most, only about 27% of American counties meet that standard.

Back in the spring, when businesses were closed and the Trump administration laid out the criteria for opening them, it said states should only open restaurants after seeing a 14-day decline in new infections — and even then, only at highly limited capacity.

  • That was then and this is now, but if you consider that measurement as a rough guide for safety, it’s a bar the U.S. absolutely cannot clear: No state has seen two straight weeks of improvement since September.
  • Reopening was also supposed to be conditioned on hospitals’ capacity, which is now nearing a breaking point in many parts of the country.

The CDC’s travel guidelines aren’t as specific, but they advise Americans to consider both their potential exposure at home and the caseload at their destination.

  • Outbreaks are bad and getting steadily worse in every state except Hawaii, so as long as you’re not coming from or going to Hawaii, both your starting point and your destination would be in high-risk states, no matter where you’re going.

The bottom line: Eating and drinking indoors with large groups of people, at a time when 150,000 people are contracting the virus every day, is about as risky as it gets. Nick Note: This is a BIG shit. You are in grave danger. Isolate isolate isolate. ITS TIME TO HUNKER DOWN!  Use ONLY our cartage filter the Slavaida P3 ULPA U15. Treasury has declined to extend five of the Fed’s CARES Act emergency programs

WASHINGTON (AP) — Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Thursday he will not extend several emergency loan programs set up with the Federal Reserve, an action that could hamper the ability of the incoming Biden administration to gain important economic support from the central bank to deal with the ongoing pandemic.  The decision drew a terse rebuke from the Fed. The central bank said it “would prefer that the full suite of emergency facilities established during the coronavirus pandemic continue to serve their important role as a backstop for our still-strained and vulnerable economy.”

But in a letter to Fed Chairman Jerome Powell, Mnuchin said that the Fed’s corporate credit, municipal lending and Main Street Lending programs would not be renewed when they expire on Dec. 31.

Under law, the loan facilities required the support of the Treasury Department, which serves as a backstop for the initial losses the programs might incur.

Mnuchin said that he is requesting that the Fed return to Treasury the unused funds appropriated by Congress for operation of the programs.

He said this would allow Congress to re-appropriate $455 billion to other coronavirus programs. Republicans and Democrats have been deadlocked for months on approval of another round of coronavirus support measures. In public remarks Tuesday, Powell made clear that he hoped that the loan programs would remain in effect for the foreseeable future. “When the right time comes, and I don’t think that time is yet, or very soon, we’ll put those tools away,” he said in an online discussion with a San Francisco-based business group. The future of the Main Street and Municipal Lending programs has taken on greater importance with President-elect Joe Biden’s victory. Many progressive economists have argued that a Democratic-led Treasury could support the Fed taking on more risk and making more loans to small and mid-sized businesses and cash-strapped cities under these programs. That would provide at least one avenue for the Biden administration to provide stimulus without going through Congress. Neither program has lived up to its potential so far, with the Municipal Lending program making just one loan, while the Main Street program has made loans totaling around $4 billion to about 400 companies.

Mnuchin’s move comes as the resurgent virus and slowing consumer spending, as well as colder weather that will shut down outdoor dining, will cause more small and mid-sized businesses to struggle with lower revenue and potentially close.

However, Republican Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania said in a statement that he approved of Mnuchin’s decision. “Congress’ intent was clear: These facilities were to be temporary, to provide liquidity and to cease operations by the end of 2020,” Toomey, a member of the Senate Finance Committee, said. ”With liquidity restored, they should expire, as Congress intended and the law requires, by Dec. 31, 2020.” Nick Note: THis is a BIG shit. The stock market has just lost its life line. Now add the fact that the economy is sucking shut you can see the slow motion train wreck. This is a fucking disaster for peoples health and wealth. And for us because we know how to isolate, disinfect and filter our air….. And we know how to cash in BIG time.

Supermarkets are most common place to catch Covid, new data reveals

PEOPLE are most likely to catch the coronavirus at the supermarket, official data has revealed.

Supermarkets have remained open during both national lockdowns and new data collated by Public Health England (PHE) from the NHS Test and Trace App has revealed that shops are the most frequent Covid exposure setting.

PHE analysed data of people who contracted the virus between November 9 and November 15. They looked at the contacts of those who had caught the virus and retraced the steps of 128,808 people who tested positive. Supermarkets were the most common location of people who reported to have tested positive for the virus. Of those who tested positive, it was found that 18.3 per cent had visited a supermarket. At the start of the pandemic large queues were seen outside of supermarkets as people lined up to buy essentials. Shops had limited the amount of people inside as they tried to maintain social distancing measures. Shoppers in supermarkets also have to wear face masks when buying their goods – unless they are exempt under national guidelines. In September supermarket bosses urged customers to not panic buy products after shelves were left empty during the first wave of the pandemic in the spring.

Both primary and secondary schools reopened in September after kids were kept off school during the first national lockdown.

The data found that secondary schools were the second place where transmission was highest, followed by primary schools. It was revealed that 12.7 per cent of people who tested positive had attended secondary school and 10.1 per cent had attended a primary school. This could be pupils attending the school, teachers or other staff who work at schools, parents at the school gates may have also been at risk of catching the virus. The government vowed to keep schools open and said the education of kids was a priority. In the last week, 124 clusters of the coronavirus have been reported in English secondary schools.

Public Health England used data from NHS Track and Trace to find out the common places people had visited who had tested positive for Covid-19.

  • Supermarket – 18.3%
  • Secondary school – 12.7%
  • Primary school – 10.1%
  • Hospital – 3.6%
  • Care home – 2.8%
  • College – 2.4%
  • Warehouse – 2.2%
  • Nursery preschool – 1.8%
  • Pub or bar – 1.6%
  • Hospitality – 1.5%
  • University – 1.4%
  • Manufacture engineering – 1.4%
  • Household fewer than five – 1.2%
  • General practice – 1.1%
  • Gym – 1.1%
  • Restaurant or cafe – 1.0%

In total, there have been 822 reported clusters of the coronavirus in English secondary schools. In primary schools there has been a total of 732 clusters reported. Hull in East Yorkshire is currently one of the most infected areas in the country and it was this week reported that schools in the area are on the brink of collapse as thousands of secondary school pupils have been forced to self isolate. This week Chris Long, the Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust chief executive, has said that a stiffer lockdown is needed to tackle growing cases in the area. He said schools might have to be closed in the area in order to curb transmission. Hospitals, colleges, care homes and warehouses all followed as the places where transmission was highest. Surprisingly, just 3.6 per cent of people who had tested positive had been in a hospital setting – this could include patients, doctors and nurses, visitors to the hospital or other hospital staff members. Care homes were also found to have a lower transmission rate and 2.8 per cent of people who tested positive said they had been at a care home. Unlike secondary and primary schools, just 2.4 per cent of people who said they had been at a college had tested positive for the virus. During the pandemic, warehouses have also been a place where many outbreaks have occurred due to close working conditions.

The data found that 2.2 per cent of people who had been at a warehouse had tested positive for the coronavirus. In July there had been an outbreak at an Iceland distribution centre in Swindon and just last month 174 workers in Norfolk were struck down at a meat factory after an outbreak. The data also found that transmission was highest in households and also revealed that infections rates could be levelling off in some parts of the country.

Landmark Danish study shows face masks have no significant effect

https://youtu.be/yaeSmXEXzP4

FULL STUDY AVAILABLE AT END OF STORY

Do face masks work? Earlier this year, the UK government decided that masks could play a significant role in stopping Covid-19 and made masks mandatory in a number of public places. But are these policies backed by the scientific evidence? Yesterday marked the publication of a long-delayed trial in Denmark which hopes to answer that very question. The ‘Danmask-19 trial’ was conducted in the spring with over 3,000 participants, when the public were not being told to wear masks but other public health measures were in place. Unlike other studies looking at masks, the Danmask study was a randomised controlled trial – making it the highest quality scientific evidence. Around half of those in the trial received 50 disposable surgical face masks, which they were told to change after eight hours of use. After one month, the trial participants were tested using both PCR, antibody and lateral flow tests and compared with the trial participants who did not wear a mask. In the end, there was no statistically significant difference between those who wore masks and those who did not when it came to being infected by Covid-19. 1.8 per cent of those wearing masks caught Covid, compared to 2.1 per cent of the control group. As a result, it seems that any effect masks have on preventing the spread of the disease in the community is small. Some people, of course, did not wear their masks properly. Only 46 per cent of those wearing masks in the trial said they had completely adhered to the rules. But even if you only look at people who wore masks ‘exactly as instructed’, this did not make any difference to the results: 2 per cent of this group were also infected.

When it comes to masks, it appears there is still little good evidence they prevent the spread of airborne diseases.

The results of the Danmask-19 trial mirror other reviews into influenza-like illnesses. Nine other trials looking at the efficacy of masks (two looking at healthcare workers and seven at community transmission) have found that masks make little or no difference to whether you get influenza or not. But overall, there is a troubling lack of robust evidence on face masks and Covid-19. There have only been three community trials during the current pandemic comparing the use of masks with various alternatives – one in Guinea-Bissau, one in India and this latest trial in Denmark. The low number of studies into the effect different interventions have on the spread of Covid-19 – a subject of global importance – suggests there is a total lack of interest from governments in pursuing evidence-based medicine. And this starkly contrasts with the huge sums they have spent on ‘boutique relations’ consultants advising the government. The only trials which have shown masks to be effective at stopping airborne diseases have been ‘observational studies’ – which observe the people who ordinarily use masks, rather than attempting to create a randomised control group. These trials include six studies carried out in the Far East during the SARS CoV-1 outbreak of 2003, which showed that masks can work, especially when they are used by healthcare workers and patients alongside hand-washing. But observational studies are prone to recall bias: in the heat of a pandemic, not very many people will recall if and when they used masks and at what distance they kept from others. The lack of random allocation of masks can also ‘confound’ the results and might not account for seasonal effects. A recent observational study paper had to be withdrawn because the reported fall in infection rates over the summer was reverted when the seasonal effect took hold and rates went back up. This is why large, randomised trials like this most recent Danish study are so important if we want to understand the impact of measures like face masks. Many people have argued that it is too difficult to wait for randomised trials – but Danmask-19 has shown that these kind of studies are more than feasible. And now that we have properly rigorous scientific research we can rely on, the evidence shows that wearing masks in the community does not significantly reduce the rates of infection. JPMorgan lays out the nightmare election scenario that could send markets into a tailspin

New York (CNN Business)Much of Wall Street views the Trump campaign’s efforts to overturn the election results as a desperate sideshow destined to fail. But JPMorgan is telling clients there’s still a chance that this process descends into chaos. It is 2020, after all. Michael Cembalest, chairman of market and investment strategy at JPMorgan Asset Management, warned in a report Wednesday of the “remote risk of an American horror story” and “constitutional mayhem.” Cembalest, who helps oversee $2.2 trillion in assets, pointed to President Donald Trump’s Tuesday night firing of the top US election security official, Attorney General William Barr’s decision to authorize prosecutors to probe alleged voter fraud and the fleeting drama over certifying election results in Michigan’s largest county. “Bottom line: a LOT of very unorthodox things have to happen for Trump to be reelected,” the JPMorgan strategist wrote. “Even so, I’m not ruling anything out.” Post-election chaos would of course rattle markets, which famously hate uncertainty. The smoother-than-feared election set off a celebration on Wall Street, with the S&P 500 notching its biggest post-election rally since 1932. But if investors don’t know who’s going to be in charge of the world’s largest economy, they could easily sell first and ask questions later. “Markets might react negatively if the US as the world’s reserve currency nation is seen as sliding down a path toward electoral illegitimacy due to post-election maneuvers by political parties,” Cembalest wrote. To be sure, legal experts say Trump’s long-shot bid at overturning the election is just that, a long-shot. Put simply, Trump is losing by too many votes in too many states. As Cembalest notes, Trump would need to “reverse or impede results in three states” to prevent Joe Biden from reaching the 270 electoral votes required by the Constitution. And as CNN has reported, despite Trump’s baseless claims (which Twitter has repeatedly flagged), there is no evidence of the widespread fraud required to overturn those results. The JPMorgan strategist laid out several developments that could cast doubt on that outcome, including that one or more states submit competing slates of electors. Those competing slates would then be resolved January 6 by the new Congress through rules spelled out in the Electoral Count Act of 1887. “The nightmare scenario for markets,” according to Cembalest, would be if Senate Republicans declare the ECA unconstitutional, flip three states in Trump’s favor to give him the required 270 electoral votes and Democrats refuse to participate. “All of which sets up the prospect of dueling inaugurations,” Cembalest wrote, noting that this outcome was only “narrowly averted” in 1876. Another risk laid out by Cembalest is if Barr directs investigators to “seize or impound election records” to probe for voter fraud, slowing down the process. For the most part, investors have appeared to ignore Trump’s war on the election results.  Markets have not flinched in response to headlines about his campaign’s many lawsuits. If anything, Wall Street came to terms with the outcome of the election even before CNN and other media outlets projected Biden to be the winner. Investors have largely focused on other matters, including the makeup of the US Senate, progress in the quest to develop a coronavirus vaccine to fight the worsening pandemic and the prospects for the economic recovery. A messy Trump-Biden transition will derail desperately needed stimulus But some are beginning to raise concerns about a transfer of power. “I think we’re making far too little of this,” CNBC anchor Jim Cramer said Wednesday while expressing worries about a peaceful transition to a new administration. Liz Ann Sonders, chief investment strategist at Charles Schwab, said that although her firm’s experts don’t see much of a risk of “rogue” electors, there “could certainly still be some black swan political event.” Perhaps heeding the warnings of Cembalest, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon has repeatedly urged Americans to respect the outcome of the election. “We need a peaceful transition. We had an election. We have a new president,” Dimon said Wednesday during The New York Time’s virtual DealBook conference. “You should support that whether you like it or not, because it’s based on a system of faith and trust.”

New York City will close schools for in-person learning to curb Covid outbreak, Mayor de Blasio says

New York City’s schools will move to remote learning only as the city tries to tamp down a growing number of coronavirus cases, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Wednesday. The shuttering of the nation’s largest school system had been anticipated for days after de Blasio told parents on Friday to have a plan in place in case the city decides to close schools for in-person learning, NBC News New York reported. Remote learning will begin Thursday, the mayor said in breaking the news over Twitter. “We’re in the middle of something really tough right now,” de Blasio said at a press briefing Monday. “We have put health and safety first, and we will put health and safety first.” The mayor said the city would close classrooms if the citywide positivity rate, or the percentage of positive tests, hits an average of 3%, which it reached on Wednesday. On a call with reporters Friday afternoon, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the city has the authority to close schools if local officials think it’s appropriate. Masks offer only moderate protection against COVID – study

COPENHAGEN (Reuters) – A Danish study of 6,000 people suggests face masks provide only moderate protection (20%) against COVID-19 infection and could not preclude that they provide no protection at all, Denmark’s leading state hospital, Rigshospitalet, said on Wednesday. Nick Note: as far as i am concerned its been settled business for a long time. last winter when Dennis came to see me from a trip to London setting up the trust. He had the worst “cold” ever. I wore a N95 mask and so did he. Dennis got very very sick but recovered. I ha a slight temperature and congestion. I took my Quinine pills and quickly improved. US adds 161,934 COVID-19 cases, 1,707 deaths

According to data from the authoritative Johns Hopkins University, there are more than 55 million and a half infections and 1,337,559 victims. The heaviest toll is still that of the US with 11.35 million infections and 248,600 deaths. As for the tragic ranking of mortality, in second place is Brazil with 166,699 deaths followed by India (130,519), Mexico (99,026), Great Britain (52,839), Italy (46,346) and France (42,461). of infections has become the first European country to exceed two million cases, to be precise 2,087,183 behind the United States, India (8.9 million) and Brazil (5.9 million).

USA: 161,934 cases and 1,707 deaths in 24 hours

The United States has recorded 161,934 new coronavirus infections and 1,707 deaths in the past 24 hours, according to data provided by Johns Hopkins University. The country now has a total of at least 11,357,322 cases and 248,672 deaths, according to the university tally.

In India, over 130,000 victims
The number of deaths linked to the coronavirus in India has exceeded 130,000, according to data from the American Johns Hopkins University.

The Asian country is third in the world for the number of Covid-19 victims behind the United States (almost 250,000) and Brazil (over 166,000).It is second in terms of the number of infections recorded since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, 8.87 million

Turkey, cases on the rise.

Partial lockdown since Monday Turkey has joined the growing list of countries that are imposing a partial lockdown after a sharp rise in coronavirus cases. The Turkish Interior Ministry announced today that the new measures limiting the working hours of restaurants, cafes, shopping centers and hairdressers from 7 to 17 will come into effect on Friday evening. A partial block will also be imposed on weekends until further notice, while cinemas will be closed for the rest of the year.Ankara has reported 3,819 new cases of Covid-19 in the past 24 hours and 103 coronavirus-related deaths, updating the toll. Total deaths at 11.70

New record of cases in Tokyo
Tokyo has recorded a new record of coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, confirming data that indicate the arrival of a third wave, which could lead the authorities to impose new restrictions. As reported by the public chain NHK, in the last 24 hours 493 new cases of contagion have been registered in the capital, a figure higher than the previous daily record (472), recorded on 1 August. Nationally, Japan recorded a new daily record with 1,736 new infections last Saturday.

Australia, six-day mini lockdown in the southThe premier of South Australia has announced the imposition of a six-day lockdown to contain the spread of the coronavirus after the discovery of an outbreak in a hotel. The Guardian reports it. Australia in general has managed to manage the Covid-19 pandemic better than almost any country in the world with less than 28,000 total cases and just over 900 victims. In the south, after more than seven days without a case of local transmission, 20 infected were registered in Adelaide where another 4,000 people were forced to go into solitary confinement. For this reason Prime Minister Steven Marshall has announced the new measures and other states of Australia have closed the borders to the south. The lockdown, which will start from midnight today, will be mini in duration but quite rigid. They will close all universities and schools except for children with disabilities and children of essential workers; stop at bars, restaurants, pubs, clubs and even take-away food; you can only go to the hospital for chemotherapy or other cancer treatments and for urgent interventions; ban on outdoor sports, a very popular activity throughout Australia especially now that it is summer, and of course stop all travel within the region.
