Rubio: US welcomes E3’s Iran sanctions snapback

United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Thursday that the United States welcomes the reimposition of United Nations sanctions on Iran, initiated by Germany, the United Kingdom, and France. Rubio claimed that Iran “established a strong basis for initiating snapback” by continuing “significant non-performance of its nuclear commitments.” “At the same time, the United States remains available for direct engagement with Iran – in furtherance of a peaceful, enduring resolution to the Iran nuclear issue,” Rubio added and said that “snapback does not contradict our earnest readiness for diplomacy, it only enhances it.” Germany, the United Kingdom, and France reimposed UN sanctions on Iran by activating the “snapback” mechanism, which restored the restrictions lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal. Earlier today, the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister announced that Iran would halt its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) should the three countries make such a move.
