Secret Service boss blames ‘sloped roof’ for not putting sniper team on building used by would-be Trump assassin

Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle addressed one of the central mysteries in the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump: how Thomas Matthew Crooks was able to climb onto the top of a nearby building and have a clear sightline to Trump without being stopped. A Secret Service sniper shot and killed the suspected gunman just moments after he fired multiple rounds. Trump was grazed in the ear and a rally-goer was killed. In an interview with ABC News, Cheatle said: “That building in particular has a sloped roof at its highest point. And so, you know, there’s a safety factor that would be considered there that we wouldn’t want to put somebody up on a sloped roof.” She added, “the decision was made to secure the building from inside.” Three snipers from local law enforcement were inside the building that places them just feet from the rooftop where Thomas Crooks fired the shots that not only wounded Trump’s ear at the Pennsylvania rally but also took the life of one attendee and injured two others. A spokesperson for the U.S. Secret Service on Monday said the federal agency also hadn’t conducted its own sweep of the building prior to the event, instead relying on local law enforcement to secure the site President Trump’s would-be assassin fired from, and one of them had spotted him outside on three separate occasions prior to the shooting. The sniper took a picture of the gunman nearly 30 minutes before the shooting, when he saw he had a rangefinder..
